As we reach the end of a vibrant and busy autumn term, I’d like to extend a huge congratulations to all our pupils at Heolddu. Your commitment, energy, and determination have shone through in every lesson, assembly, rehearsal, match, and milestone. Our new pupils in Year 7 have settled very well, as have our new-to-sixth-form Year 12s, who are making a positive impact on our community already through their charity events and support of teaching and learning and extracurricular activities across the school. To our parents and families, thank you for the unwavering support you provide—your partnership is invaluable and deeply appreciated.
This term has been filled with moments that truly brought our community together: a joyful community concert that showcased remarkable talent, an inspiring awards evening celebrating achievements at GCSE and A Level as well as across the school, and the excitement building around our ski trip. Each event reflects the spirit, teamwork, and enthusiasm that make our school such a special place. I wish you all a very relaxing and peaceful Christmas break, and we look forward to seeing everyone on Monday, 5 January 2026.
Mrs N Davies
Pennaeth | Headteacher
This term, we have been incredibly busy serving our community, and we are proud to share some of the highlights and successes from the past few months.
One of our standout events was Coffee and Create – Spooktacular Edition, which brought together students, parents, and staff in a creative and welcoming environment. We were delighted to see a significant increase in parental engagement, demonstrating the strength of our school community and the value of coming together to share experiences.
We also celebrated our first-ever Community Concert, a truly special occasion where Bargoed Choir and our students from all backgrounds joined forces to deliver a spectacular performance. The event not only showcased the talents of our students but also raised funds for our PTFA and broader school community. Seeing everyone come together to support a common cause was truly heartwarming.
This year, we have been incredibly fortunate to work alongside our partners, Bargoed Masons and Bargoed Council, whose generosity has made a real difference in the lives of our families. For the second consecutive year, Bargoed Masons provided essential items to support our community during Christmas, while Bargoed Council, alongside the Mayor, supported both the Christmas Hamper Appeal and the Community Concert.
Adding a festive touch, a group of our students enthusiastically took on “elf duties”, helping to prepare and deliver the Christmas hampers. They brought joy and festive cheer directly to the doorsteps of our families, embodying the true spirit of giving and community support. Their dedication and energy made a real difference and left a lasting smile on many faces.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has been involved in these events, whether through participation, support, or volunteer work. Your contributions truly embody the spirit of Christmas and the essence of community, and we are deeply grateful for your continued dedication.
Looking ahead, we hope that the new year brings even more opportunities to build on these successes, strengthen our connections, and continue to make a positive impact together.
In addition, our student leadership team attended a community-focused school conference, contributing their ideas to help shape Welsh Government guidance on what community means to us. Their insights and suggestions will help inform how schools across Wales can foster stronger, more inclusive communities. Our students’ enthusiasm and commitment to making a difference are inspiring, and we are excited to see their ideas put into action locally.
This term has reminded us of the incredible power of community, collaboration, and shared purpose. Together, we have achieved so much, and we look forward to continuing this journey in the year ahead.
Pupils from Heolddu have once again been actively supporting the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal in a variety of ways this year. Sixth Form students staffed the poppy appeal merchandise stall in Morrisons throughout the week leading up to Remembrance Sunday, raising over £3,400 in total. A poppy sale in school also raised more than £140. In addition, Performing Arts students delivered another memorable and moving performance at the Bargoed Town Council Remembrance Festival, which the school also hosted. The students represented our school and community impeccably and received high praise for their conduct.
“To all the fantastic, community‑spirited students at Heolddu Comprehensive School who were wonderful ambassadors for their school and the whole community, it was a pleasure to see them immaculately turned out and dealing with the public in such a polite, professional manner. Cheers, guys, for all the hard work you put in again this year.”
— James H. Kerby, Secretary, Bargoed and District Branch of The Royal British Legion, and Deputy Poppy Appeal Organiser (RBL)

Staff and members of the local branch of the Royal British Legion also made and planted poppies, further enriching the display and strengthening the sense of community involvement.
Bargoed Library will be hosting free STEM and Gaming Sessions until March 2026, funded by Bargoed Town Council. These sessions are open to all pupils and families in the Bargoed and Greater Bargoed area, with the project also reaching out to over 20 local schools to promote STEM and wellbeing.
The sessions are run by Caerphilly Table‑Top & Gamers Society (CTG), a club established in 2018, and hosted by Vik Yadh of Yadh Education & Event Services CIC (YesCIC) — providers of school workshops, clubs, and events such as Caerphilly Comic Con.
📍 Next session: Saturday 13th December 2025, 10 am–4 pm at Bargoed Library, Hanbury Road, CF81 8QR.
🕚 CTG STEMHOUR: 11 am–12 noon, focusing on maths and strategy‑based games.
Children and families can enjoy tabletop board games, role‑play games (RPG), ancient board games, and trading card games such as Pokémon and Magic. Pupils are encouraged to bring their own favourites to share, but plenty of games will be provided too.
Important: Parents/carers are advised that pupils under 8 years old cannot be left unsupervised in the library.
This is a fantastic opportunity to discover that games are more than consoles and mobile devices — they’re a way to learn strategy, practise maths, and socialise with fellow gamers.
A reminder of our school's uniform expectations to ensure all pupils maintain a smart and consistent appearance. Please refer to the document for full details.
If you would like to donate any uniforms that pupils have outgrown, please hand them in at the main reception. Your donation can help other pupils who may not have access to appropriate clothing. Additionally, if any parents or carers would like to access the uniform bank at Heolddu, please let us know. We want to ensure that every pupil has access to the clothing they need to succeed in their education.
On 11th December, Maria and the kitchen team served a delicious Christmas dinner that was enjoyed by pupils and staff alike. It was a lovely occasion, and we are grateful for all the effort that went into making it special for everyone.
Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Dda from all at Heolddu! 🎄
The Halloween Disco was a fantastic evening filled with energy, laughter, and plenty of spooky fun. Pupils were amazing throughout, creating a brilliant atmosphere that brought our school community together.
A big thank you to the staff who helped organise the event and to those who supported on the night — your efforts made the disco such a success.
Heolddu pupils and staff showed incredible generosity in support of Children in Need. Together, we raised a fantastic total of £658.86. Our Sixth Formers did an amazing job leading the fundraising, while our KS3 pupils enjoyed getting creative with colouring activities, which alone raised £120.
A huge well done and thank you to everyone who contributed. Your efforts made a real difference and highlighted the wonderful community spirit.
In October, pupils celebrated Diwrnod Shwmae with a Holi ac Ateb challenge. Learners were asked four questions and were rewarded with a prize if they could use their Cymraeg skills to help them answer the questions correctly. Da iawn to everyone who participated!
In November, some of our Year 9 pupils attended a creative writing day at Cardiff University, where they took part in workshops on poetry, illustration, and character development. Pupils also had the chance to meet one of the authors for the literature element of GCSE Cymraeg, Siôn Tomos Owen. Some fantastic work was produced and, as always, our learners were a credit to the school. Da iawn, pawb!
In November, some of our Year 11 pupils attended a ‘Cyfleoedd Cymraeg’ campus day at Cardiff University, where they learned more about the advantages of continuing their Cymraeg studies after completing their GCSEs. Pupils participated in a skills workshop delivered by staff from the Cymraeg department at Cardiff University, as well as attending a Q&A session with ambassadors from Y Coleg Cymraeg in order to learn more about the career opportunities available for Welsh speakers. A fantastic day was had by all. Diolch yn fawr iawn to Cardiff University, Y Coleg Cymraeg, and Reaching Wider for their support in organising the day for our pupils.
The school has qualified for a grant from the Engineering Council for the second year running. We have now received close to £6,000 from them, spread over two years. This has allowed us to invest in five 3D printers for use in Technology and ten data loggers with various sensors for use in Science lessons.
In addition to this, our Year 10 Engineering class has been taking part in a competition where they had to build a robotic arm and then program it to remove items from a production line and arrange them ready for packaging.
This has given the pupils the opportunity to improve their team‑building and problem‑solving skills by applying what they have learned to a “real‑world” problem. Engineers from local employer Norgine have visited the school to introduce the event and will be returning to judge the pupils’ superb efforts. The skills that the pupils have been using will be directly transferable to those employed by engineers in many companies worldwide. The effort that has been put into this project by these pupils has been incredible — they have given up many lunchtimes in order to complete the project. They should all be hugely proud of what they have achieved.
Our Coding Club from last year has continued into this year. So far, the club has learned basic Python programming skills, and they have also built and tested two robots.
The current project is learning to program and use some sound engineering kits that were donated to the school by the UK Electronics Skills Foundation. This will allow them to further develop their programming skills and their ability to build and test electronic projects. They will also gain experience in creating and editing sound files
The autumn term has certainly been a busy one for the Sixth Form! We have welcomed a whole host of guest speakers and participated in plenty of workshops too. Here’s a round-up of what we have been up to so far this year.
September saw our Sixth Form leadership team come into their own as our Head Students, Max and Shyanne, welcomed prospective pupils to our Year 5 and Year 6 Open Evening. After sharing their own experiences of school and expressing their best wishes to our future pupils, they led an impressive team of Sixth Form volunteers to support the evening as expert tour guides.
In October, our Year 12 and 13 pupils travelled to Cardiff City Stadium for the UK University & Apprenticeship Fair. It was a successful day filled with helpful seminars that left us with lots to consider, plenty to think about, and a fair few freebies too!
In November, our Sixth Form pupils supported the Royal British Legion’s 2025 Poppy Appeal at Morrisons, Bargoed. They represented the school with great pride and to great acclaim:
“To all the fantastic, community‑spirited students at Heolddu Comprehensive School who were wonderful ambassadors for their school and the whole community, it was a pleasure to see them immaculately turned out and dealing with the public in such a polite, professional manner. Cheers, guys, for all the hard work you put in again this year.”
— James H. Kerby
Together they helped to raise over £3,100 for the Bargoed and District Branch of The Royal British Legion — a truly outstanding amount and £400 more than last year! Word of their hard work and dedication has clearly spread, as Sameer, our Student Ambassador, was even stopped by Lauren Price MBE for a photo. Great work everyone!
A stellar cast of Sixth Form students took to the stage to entertain all those who attended the annual Awards Evening and Community Concert in the final week of November. Not only was it fantastic to see so many members of our Sixth Form collecting their awards, but it was also wonderful to hear our Head Students speak so eloquently. Da iawn, pawb!
