UNIT TWO - BASIC GEOGRAPHY
Compass - A tool on a map showing cardinal (N,E,S,W) and intermediate (NE,SE,NW,SW) directions.
Cardinal directions - North, South, East, West
Intermediate directions - Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest
Longitude - Distance east or west of the prime meridian, measured in degrees
Latitude - Distance north or south of the Equator, measured in degrees
Prime Meridian - The meridian, designated at 0° longitude.
Equator - an imaginary line drawn around the earth equally distant from both poles, dividing the earth into northern and southern hemispheres and constituting the parallel of latitude 0°.
Absolute location - a specific description of where a place is located; absolute location is often expressed using latitude and longitude
Relative location - where a place is located in relation to another place
Map Key - explains the lines, symbols, and colors used on a map
Physical Map - A map that shows mountains, hills, plains, rivers, lakes, oceans, etc.
Political Map - A map showing units such as countries, states, provinces, districts, etc. Each is normally a different color
