LIEP Teacher & Department Chair

Ms. Carr leads the LIEP team at Tucker High School - the most diverse school in Virginia. She has worked with international students since 2008 and has taught ESL at Tucker since 2016. She has lived in Arizona, Virginia, and Mexico, and is part of a multilingual family; which lends personal experience to her practice. She holds a Bachelor’s in Anthropology, a Master of Education in TESOL, and a post-graduate certificate in Administration and Supervision. In addition to her role at HCPS, Ms. Carr is also part of the faculty at the College of William & Mary, teaching business English to international graduate students. Leading with culturally responsive, trauma-informed practices, Ms. Carr values creating safe learning spaces, student empowerment and community relationships. Outside of school, you’ll find her at a plant swap. social dancing, or working on her current project — a recorded oral history of multilingualism in Virginia.

Ms. Davidson holds a B.A. in Integrative Studies with a concentration in International Studies from George Mason University. She earned a minor in Chinese and TESL as well. She volunteered in Guizhou, China as a volunteer English teacher and volunteered at The Arlington Education and Employment Program during her senior year at Mason. She attained her M.S. Ed in Secondary Education, Teaching English as a Second Language from Old Dominion University. She enjoys learning about languages and fiber arts. She was a past Tucker Tiger as a student. She is excited to be back at Tucker to teach and be a part of the LIEP team!

Mrs. DeMascio holds a B.A. in History from Virginia Commonwealth University.  She began her ESL career as an Immigrant Youth Tutor at JR. Tucker High School.  She was inspired by her Tucker Tiger ESL students to go back to school and get her ESL teaching degree from Old Dominion University.  She lives in Richmond with her family, three cats, and one dog.  Mrs. Demascio is looking forward to being part of the Tucker Tiger LIEP team.

Mr. Milliken received his B.A. in Geography from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. After college, he moved to Bangkok, Thailand, where he taught elementary school in an English immersion program for eight years. He earned his M.Ed. from Framingham State University in Massachusetts before moving back to the U.S. to teach high school in Williamsburg. 

Outside of school, Mr. Milliken enjoys cooking dinner, exercising, fixing cars, playing video games, and spending time with his two miniature dachshunds, Lilli and Reese.

LIEP Teacher

Mrs. Okuda holds a B.A. in Foreign Language with a concentration in Spanish from Virginia Commonwealth University. When she was a student at VCU, Mrs. Okuda studied abroad in Cuernavaca, Mexico. She holds an M.Ed. in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Mary Washington, and has been published in the VATESOL newsletter. Over the summer Mrs. Okuda spent part of July teaching English in various public schools in Colombia. Mrs. Okuda is very excited to be a part of the ESL team!

Ms. Taylor earned a master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages (TESOL) at the University of Colorado. She also has a bachelor’s degree in English language and literature from California State University. Ms. Taylor has a love of languages, especially American Sign Language, Spanish, and French. She has worked and volunteered in many classrooms that serve people with sensory disabilities (e.g. Deaf and/or blind) as well as immigrants and refugees. In her free time, she enjoys doing crochet and other creative projects, playing tabletop games and video games, and spending time with her family and pets. She is excited to be a Tucker Tiger!

LIEP Teacher

Jeff Varljen grew up in Richmond; and he holds a B.A. in both Spanish and History from Virginia Commonwealth University, as well as a M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction from the University of Richmond. He is endorsed in Spanish K-12 and ESL. 

For the past 11 years, he has taught Spanish at Fairfield Middle School and Varina High School. In addition, he has coached varsity boys' soccer at Varina High School. His education passions include working with diverse learners, coaching new teachers, increasing student engagement, and the exploring foundations of education. 

Outside the classroom, Jeff is married with two children; and he enjoys gardening, keeping chickens, roasting (and drinking) coffee, playing guitar, and creative writing. 

Jeff is very excited to culminate his many interests and passions to work with the amazing staff and students at Tucker High School.
