Classes
Students will receive linguistic support by taking up to three LIEP classes. As a student gains proficiency, they take fewer LIEP classes and more mainstream content classes taught in English. All courses are taught by our specialized and highly-qualified English as a Second Language teachers.
Language Instruction Educational Program
Levels I-4
• Basic language skills, vocabulary, and grammar
• Acquire skills in understanding, speaking, reading and writing English
• Learn language to support social interactions
• Develop academic language to support core content
LIEP Reading Across the curriculum
Levels 1-2
• Begin/improve reading skills
• Acquire word-attack, comprehension and study skills
• Apply reading skills to content reading
LIEP Language & Culture
Level 1
• Build proficiency in English through the study of cultural topics associated with everyday life in the context of American culture
• Discuss signs, symbols and gestures as a form of communication
Co-taught and/or sheltered Content Classes
Levels 2-4
• Select content courses in English Language Arts
• Taught collaboratively with a content teacher and LIEP teacher
•Provides additional linguistic support for Multilingual Learners
