House Fable
The Leader of the Pack
For many years Tabia had been the leader of the largest pack of wolves in the forest. He loved everything about his position, but realized he was getting old and could not be the pack leader forever. It was time for him to select and train his successor, however deciding which wolf would be best-qualified to take on this important role would not be an easy task. After careful consideration, Tabia narrowed the field down to three members of the pack. Before making his final decision, he told each of the wolves to go out independently and gather as much food as they could by sundown.
Elated about the opportunity and eager to please Tabia, each of the wolves ran off to begin their task. The first wolf went straight to his parents and asked if he could use the food they already had for the evening’s meal. The second wolf had his younger brothers and sisters go out and gather food for him while he took a nap. The third wolf went out on his own and hunted for food all day using all the skills he had learned throughout his life.
At sundown all three wolves arrived with their food, where Tabia asked each one to display what they’d gathered. Both the first wolf and second wolf presented impressive amounts of food, much larger in quantity than that of the third. Tabia looked at all three wolves and stated, “As the future leader of the pack, you must have strong character. Each of you was asked to independently gather food. Having someone else do your work for you fails to follow my instructions.”
Tabia beckoned for the third wolf to step forward. “You will be the new leader of the pack. I am confident you have strong character and possess all the qualities necessary to make a wonderful leader. You are trustworthy, responsible, and will be respected by all.”
