House Fable
It Would Be My Honor
It was election time in the land of Rongyu. Everyone was excitedly discussing possible candidates to be their leader. One day Peacock was talking to Eagle. “I think you would make a great leader because you are so beautiful.” Eagle shyly responded “No, not I. Look at your beautiful feathers. You should be our leader.”
Later that day, Eagle visited his friend Ox. Ox suggested that Eagle should be their leader because he was so powerful and strong. Eagle responded “No, not I. Look at your strong horns. You can move the heaviest loads. You should be our leader.”
The next day, Lion came to Eagle’s nest to share his idea about who should be the leader. “I think it should be you Eagle, you are so brave.” Eagle quietly responded, “No, not I. I think you are the bravest in our land and you should be our leader.”
Later that night, Eagle was humbly sitting by the water when the old, wise owl spoke to him, “Who-Who should be our leader?” Eagle replied, “I think it should be someone not only with grace and beauty, but with strength and bravery as well.” Owl thought for a moment before countering, “While all of those characteristics are important, our leader should also be someone with honor and humility, and that someone is you, Eagle!” Eagle went quiet for a few minutes while he thought about what Owl said. “Goodnight Owl,” Eagle said softly. “Goodnight Eagle.”
The next day was election day and the votes were in! “The votes were unanimous and Eagle, you were chosen to be our leader,” Peacock announced. Eagle happily answered, “Really? You really think I can do it?” “Of course Eagle! It was never a competition. So, do you think you’re up for the task?” questioned Ox. Eagle smiled and proudly said, “Yes, it would be my honor to represent this great land!”
