Tips for Candidates

Selection for membership in National Honor Society is dependent on your ability to demonstrate excellence in ALL FOUR areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

  • Read the Selection Process Information document thoroughly before you begin. There are specific directions and guidelines you must follow when submitting your candidate information packet.

  • Make sure you turn in your completed hours of community service to the school representative (school counseling) as you finish them. There is no minimum number of community service hours required for membership, but having completed at least the number of hours required for graduation is advised.

  • Faculty evaluate each student on character. They are looking for examples of when you have stood out from your peers in a positive way or shown good moral judgement. Being a student who does what is expected is a good start, but not necessarily evidence of quality character. Seek opportunities to show your leadership skills and set a positive example in class, on the field or on the stage!

  • Choose to write about activities that you are passionate about for your essay. This is your time to show just why you spend your valuable time on this particular activity. Be specific about your participation and how you show leadership through this activity. Be cautious about choosing to write about activities you have just started - it can be difficult to adequately show leadership if you haven't been participating very long.
