Students in Criminal Justice I are performing police to magistrate simulations. The students partnered up, with one performing the police investigation and one being a magistrate. The magistrate and officer have to work together to determine the appropriate charges and complete the legal process.
To celebrate the successful completion of the 2025–2026 our Day 2 Cybersecurity Pathways program, our students took a well-earned field trip to Topgolf. But this wasn’t just fun and games—it was also a unique opportunity to explore the technology behind the scenes. Students learned how Topgolf uses RFID-enabled golf balls, sensor networks, and data tracking systems to create an interactive, tech-driven experience. It was a great chance to see real-world applications of cybersecurity and IT systems in the entertainment industry. From tech discussions to team swings, the day was both educational and memorable. We're proud of our students and all they’ve accomplished this year!
We hosted the Secondary Principals meeting and students in Electricity, Automotive Tech and Cybersecurity hosted a Principal Workshop where students taught hands-on skills to the Principals. From changing a tire/oil, to replacing an outlet/light switch to making a low voltage connector. Principals were impressed with our students!
ACE@HS had 9 of the 38 HCPS Teacher Scholars announced this past month, the most from ANY HCPS school this year!
High Tech Academy students completed a mini environmental challenge with Dr. Loving and Mr. Totten. The challenge was to design a tool or process to help clean up the plastics caught in the ocean.
We hosted Automotive and Electricity students from all ACE Centers to learn more about Energy & Power opportunities with Dominion Power.
Over the next two months, students in all programs are gearing up for certification and licensure exams.

Students in High Tech Academy have been diving into the world of Civil Engineering through a hands-on unit focused on bridges. After learning about different types of bridges and the forces that act on them, students worked individually to design and construct their own truss bridges using lightweight balsa wood.
The final test was a highlight—each bridge was placed in a structural testing unit to measure how much weight it could support before failing. While this year’s top-performing bridges came close, none surpassed the current HTA record of 99 pounds, set last year by a student-built truss bridge. Still, students showed impressive engineering skills and creativity throughout the project, learning firsthand how structural design and material choices impact a bridge’s strength and stability.
From March 3rd - 7th, the ACE Center at Highland Springs celebrated National World Languages Week! Our students answered Challenge Questions about world languages and recognized the benefits of studying another/other languages!
Students in criminal justice 2 are just finished our unit on domestic violence. They learned the laws and policies on mandatory arrest, determining the primary aggressor, and all resources available to our residents who may be experiencing domestic issues in the their homes.
Students handled "domestic calls" and had to make the appropriate arrest and issue the Emergency Protective Order.
Knowing how to install operating systems on both local devices and virtual machines is a crucial skill for any aspiring IT or cybersecurity professional. Local installations teach hands-on hardware setup, driver management, and system configuration, while virtual machines provide a safe, flexible environment for testing multiple OS versions without affecting real hardware.
These skills are essential for troubleshooting, system deployment, and cybersecurity research. By mastering both, students gain the adaptability needed in today’s tech-driven world. The ability to set up and manage operating systems is a foundation for success in IT careers!
Students are preparing for spring certification exams and our preschool students are getting ready for Pre-K! We have celebrate our past two Staff Members of the Month - Mr. Salaam and Ms. Robinson. Our SkillsUSA students won several 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishes in the district competition and now look to states in April. We took a little time with staff to have fun with a wellness challenge called Flick'n Chick'n.

This month, High Tech Academy students have been putting their engineering knowledge into action by designing and building Rube Goldberg machines. As part of this unit, students explored simple machines, mechanical advantage, and efficiency to create intricate chain reactions that accomplish a simple task in the most complex way possible. This hands-on project challenged them to apply physics and engineering concepts while fostering creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork.

During March, the ACE Center at Highland Springs celebrated National World Languages Week! Our students answered Challenge Questions about languages. With a nod to Career and Technical Education Month, we also decorated our school by creating our own gallery of images and short bios of African-Americans whose achievements included inventions and innovations in the technical fields, entrepreneurship, and in the trades that we teach and learn about at the ACE Center at Highland Springs!
Students in criminal justice 1 completed their first mock trial last week. The prosecution and defense teams were responsible for preparing opening statements, conducting direct examinations, executing cross-examinations, and giving the closing statements.
This year, despite a strong prosecution team performance, the defense team was able to get the not-guilty verdict in their favor. This was a well prepared and performed effort on their part. Congratulations to the defense team.
Students recently got hands-on experience installing Windows 10 Pro locally on laptops, learning how to set up partitions, configure settings, and ensure a smooth installation. This real-world practice gave them a deeper understanding of system setup, troubleshooting, and the importance of a clean installation. Mastering these skills is a huge step toward becoming confident IT professionals!
Next, we’re diving into the world of virtualization by installing multiple operating systems using VirtualBox! Students will explore how virtual machines work, experiment with different OS setups, and gain critical skills for managing IT environments. Get ready to level up your tech game and unlock new possibilities in system administration!
ACE@HS Seniors competed in the Annual CTE Skills Rodeo Challenge in January. Over 700 ACE seniors participated and over 200 businesses visited to students. We've also enjoyed our new Friday treats fundraiser for our student organizations and had some teacher fun with a Candy Cane Challenge.
In the High Tech Academy program, students have been diving into the world of electricity and microcontrollers, gaining hands-on experience with practical applications of engineering concepts. Recently, they completed a soldering project to hone their technical skills and an exciting Arduino project where they designed and built innovative products with market potential. This challenge encouraged creativity and problem-solving as students combined circuitry, coding, and design to create solutions they could market to the public. These projects reflect the program's commitment to preparing students for real-world engineering and technology careers.
The ACE Center at Highland Springs celebrated National Inclusive Schools Week from December 2 - 6. Students answered Challenge Questions about well known people with disabilities such as Frida Kahlo, Daniel Radcliffe, and others who have changed the world! Students also took a pledge to be inclusive in their daily lives! As a culminating activity, every ACE Center at Highland Springs student had the opportunity to write their name on a rock and to place it in our Kindness-Inclusion Rock Garden! We are an INCLUSIVE school!
This week elementary students from around the county visited criminal justice and learned about the value of DNA and fingerprints. They also learned how to collect and package evidence at crime scenes.
Disassembling a laptop and creating a step-by-step guide gives students invaluable skills like attention to detail, technical writing, and hardware troubleshooting. This hands-on task sharpens problem-solving and teamwork while building confidence with delicate electronics. By documenting their process, students turn practical experience into a resource for future repairs, bridging classroom knowledge with real-world tech skills.
Our Trades programs were recognized this past month with two NACO awards for our distinguished work at the Springer Preschool. The entire school participated in our annual Preschool Treat Walk, which brings joy all around. The Automotive Body Repair program has started a new project for our School Security Officer - a School Golf Cart to help her get around our large campus (stay tuned to see the flip)!
Teachers have been learning new strategies in supporting vocabulary development for English learners. Plus our Trades students participated this past week in a Historical Trades Expo where 11 vendors in restoration and preservation shared their knowledge and expertise in this unique field.
Second-year High Tech Academy students recently tackled a hands-on reverse engineering project. Each student brought in a familiar object, then carefully disassembled it to study its components and functionality. This activity challenged them to think critically about design and functionality, reinforcing skills essential for future engineers. Through hands-on exploration, students gained a deeper appreciation of how everyday items are constructed and learned to document each part’s purpose with precision.
This month, the ACE Center at Highland Springs recognized National Hispanic Heritage Month! We also observed National Disability Employment Awareness Month with posters around our school and with questions for students to test their knowledge about the challenges individuals with disabilities face in employment.
Students in criminal justice have been learning about forensic evidence collection at crime scenes. Year one students have focused on collecting fingerprints, imprints, and impressions. Year two students have been practicing whole scene collection and documentation.
Students recently had the opportunity to create small-scale physical networks using routers, patch panels, and terminated jacks. As part of the project, they crafted their own Ethernet cables, gaining hands-on experience with cable termination and troubleshooting. This interactive activity bridged the gap between theory and practice, helping them understand how data flows through a network. Along the way, they developed problem-solving skills and worked as a team to design and build functional setups. Working with real hardware gave them valuable insight into IT and networking roles. The completed models, captured in photos, showcase their hard work and newly acquired expertise.

Our classes are in full swing and working hard to finish strong for the end of the nine weeks. Plus Ms. Paul and Dr. Loving presented at the Virginia Career and Technical Education Administrators Conference in Harrisonburg, VA to showcase strategies for using data analysis to improve certification remediation practices.
Students in dual enrollment engineering visited VCU and got to experience what it feels like to be a college student last week. One of the professors conducted an experiment showing the efficiency and effectiveness of different types of light bulbs. They got to see which types consume more energy and which types emit the most light.
Second-year HTA students are revisiting the Engineering Design Process by creating a vehicle powered by a mousetrap. They built a similar vehicle from a kit last year and are being challenged this year by only being given a mousetrap. Students have creatively solved the challenge by using wooden rulers, cardboard, skewers, and CDs to make their vehicles.

Students in criminal justice 2 are learning the wide topic of searching. They completed search warrants, conducting building searches, and learned the process of searching arrestees.
In our latest cybersecurity class, students experienced the thrill of hands-on learning by disassembling and reassembling a desktop computer. The lab was filled with excitement as they carefully removed components like RAM and hard drives, many for the first time. Reassembling the machine tested their knowledge and focus, but the real reward came when the computers powered back on, greeted by cheers. This exercise not only deepened their understanding of hardware but also sparked a newfound passion for the intricacies of cybersecurity.

We have started off the 24-25 school year with a wonderful group of students and staff. We welcomed just over 550 students to ACE@HS and we have been so proud of the professionalism we have seen to date!

High Tech Academy students worked in teams during their first week of school to build towers. First-year students divided into small groups and came up with things everyone in the group shared in common. They wrote down what they came up with on notecards and then used them to build the tallest tower. One group finished with a tower that was over 40 inches tall! Second-year students were given 100 small cups and 100 notecards and then tasked with building a tower with the most cup "floors". The winning team made a tower that was 19 cup stories high!
