Year 4 in Hengoed Primary was lucky enough to interview Mike Voyle!
Mike lives in New Zealand now but we managed to meet online!
Here are some of the questions from our interview with Mike Voyle!
I grew up in Penallta which I know is very close to your school. I know Hengoed very well and I used to train by running over the Hengoed Viaduct weekly! I really enjoyed those days when my body was young, fit, and healthy!
Right now I live in New Zealand and I sell houses. But I am still involved with rugby even though I'm not playing anymore. I like to do a little bit of coaching where I can. I like to help out with the local rugby team as well as do a bit of coaching with the local collage too.
I've played against many hard teams and players through the years but I have to say the All Blacks, which is New Zealand, is the toughest team I played against. I remember being in New Zealand playing against them and they had a squad full of superstars!
I used to play in the forwards and I remember one scrum where we were defending our tryline. The scrum was so intense I thought that my head was going to pop!
I used to enjoy waiting for the school team to be announced when I was a kid. I will always remember waiting for my old PE teacher to put up a list of names on the wall outside the changing rooms of who would be playing the next game.
I am still the only person to play for Penallta as well as play rugby for Wales. And I want that to change! Boys and Girls, if you have a dream of playing rugby for Wales - go for it!
