Why Chromebooks?
The district chose Chromebooks for many reasons, but the main reason is that we believe it is the most cost-effective/easy-to-use device for the classroom. Chromebooks allow teachers to manage and instruct student learning beyond the classroom walls. Chromebooks provide students with the ability to explore, collaborate, and learn anywhere, anytime.
What is the Chrome Operating System (OS)?
The Chrome OS (Operating System) works with web-based applications; there are no programs to load and no program updates to install. The Chrome OS automatically updates, therefore you are always running the most current version. Because of its advanced security features, Chrome offers a very safe browsing experience.
G-Suite for Education
What is G-Suite?
HCS G-Suite is an integrated communication and collaboration solution, hosted by Google and managed by HCS. G-Suite provides the vehicle for HCS students, faculty and staff to communicate, store files, and collaborate on documents, spreadsheets, and presentations in real time from anywhere.
Will my student have access to a Gmail Account?
Not at this time. They do however have a Microsoft Exchange account that does give them access to email. Your student can find the webmail tab located in their Managed Bookmarks.
What about privacy?
HCS is responsible for protecting and safeguarding the confidentiality of student information. HCS has a contract with Google to provide G-Suite access to its users (students and staff) in a separate domain environment for HCS students and staff. Under our Terms of Service Agreement with Google, like HCS, they are obligated to comply with FERPA regulations. Click here for additional information about G-Suite security & privacy.
How protected is my student from outside people?
HCS takes security and privacy of student information very seriously. The HCS G-Suite domain is managed for access by staff and students in HCS, so your student will be able to work and collaborate in a safe and secure online environment.
What assurances has Google given HCS that they will not collect data on my student?
HCS has a signed agreement with G-Suite for Education. HCS G-Suite for Education is compliant with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
Who has access to my child’s account?
The G-Suite Terms of Service agreement with HCS contractually ensures that our institution (students, faculty, and staff) are the sole owners of their data. Google will only access content stored when an administrator from HCS grants Google explicit permission to do so; one example would be to investigate inappropriate use.
Who creates the login password?
The HCS Technology Support Staff maintains username and passwords for HCS staff and students.
