Presume Competence: We presume competence, means we assume that one is able to communicate and will learn how to use their AAC system to communicate effectively. It may take time, and you may need to explore, but believing they can do it will make a big difference.
Make AAC Always Available: AAC should always be available! Keep it around and take it everywhere to give the AAC user opportunities to use it.
Personalize Vocabulary & System: Personalize the AAC user's vocabulary with important words, favorite items, family pictures, and etc. Send any updates or changes you would like to school site SLP, teacher, or the AAC department.
Learn & Explore: Become familiar with the AAC system. Take some time to get to know how the AAC system works. Scan through the vocabulary and familiarize yourself with the layout.
Model: Point to words on the AAC system as we talk to the AAC user. Use the device to communicate and model regularly throughout the day. This will benefit the AAC user learning the meaning of the icons the more you talk with the device.
Make it Fun: Use the AAC system to communicate during fun, motivating, and engaging activities. Refrain from using it only during demand or task based activities.
Encourage: It is important that the AAC user is encouraged to use their AAC system and not forced. Refrain from grabbing their hand or hand over hand prompting to press the icons of something you may want them to say.
