What is Orff?
Not a what but a WHO! Carl Orff is well know for his composition of Carmina Burana, but did you know that he was also one of the founders of an approach to teaching music to kids?
Sing - Say - Dance - Play, is the common description of the Orff-Schulwerk approach to making music. This participatory approach combines song, speech and drama, creative movement and dance, as well as instrument playing in an infinite variety of experiences. The combination of these activities engages all of the participant’s senses in the musical “moment” and is intended to free the music-making process from excessive theorizing. Such an approach takes advantage of the young child's natural instinct to experience music and movement as a whole. It also allows individuals (students and teachers) with different abilities and interests to find means of expressing themselves through music. The primary characteristic of the Orff-Schulwerk process is a progression from teacher-directed (imitative or rote) experiences to student-directed experiences (improvisation). In the Shady Oaks music room my ideal style of teaching elementary music follows the methodology of the Orff-Schulwerk approach. This is an initiative I have been working on along with other elementary music certifications since my first year of teaching.
