Dyslexia Program

Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede the acquisition of vocabulary and background knowledge.
While the majority of dyslexic learners are identified in elementary years, some students are not identified until later years. For these reasons, Hurst Euless Bedford ISD provides a dyslexia program on every campus, from first grade through senior year. In addition, we are experts at helping to design the right accommodation plan through Section 504, or through an IDEA IEP.
Visit our Dyslexia Resources tab to access parent\guardian friendly guides on Section 504 and the IDEA ARD Process.

HEB ISD provides dyslexia programming in the areas of phonological awareness, phonics, letter knowledge, language structure, and linguistic patterns in accordance with the State Dyslexia Handbook. Services may be provided through the SPDI (Standard Protocol Dyslexia Instruction) program, or in more complex cases, may require an individualized instruction plan through Special Education. No matter which campus you attend in HEB ISD, we have a dyslexia class for you!The mission of the Special Education and Dyslexia Department is to promote student success by supporting collaborative teams focused on individual learning and social/emotional growth.
