There are many ways in which Headliners in Education fulfills its nonprofit mission to engage and inspire students through journalism, all while connecting the entire school community. Here are some of the latest examples.
Every year the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network uses the Nonprofit Excellence Awards to highlight the work of organizations and employees who are making a difference.
Headliners is one of five finalists in the Small Nonprofit Excellence Award category, which, according to MNN, "recognizes a nonprofit organization with an annual budget of $250,000 or less. Despite its small size, this organization has managed to fulfill its mission and make major contributions to the populations that it serves."
Other nonprofits in the category are Healthy Waltham, It Takes a Village, Speak for the Trees Boston, and Top Notch Scholars.
The Awards are being held on Wednesday, June 23, 2021 in a virtual event starting at 10:00 am. Registration is FREE. Sign up here.
In February/March 2021, Headliners held its first ever contest. Read their winning stories and look at their winning photos on our Showcase Page!

Using a grant from Headliners, the Crimson Times student newspaper at Everett (Mass.) High School is finally going online!
In September 2020, HiE provided the funds for the Crimson Times to launch its own newspaper website, which will be housed on SNO. Look for it soon at EHSCrimsonTimes.com.
(If you know of a student newspaper that would also like to move onto the web, drop a note to journalism@headlinersineducation.org for information about applying for a HiE website grant.)
On August 11, 2020, HiE founder John Vitti appeared on the It's All Journalism podcast to talk about the benefits of school journalism. Listen here.
HiE Founder John Vitti accepted an invitation to join the advisory board of the Team Harmony Foundation in July 2020. Meet the rest of the board here!
The Team Harmony Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) committed to educating, inspiring and engaging youth in the battle against hate in all its forms. The primary goal of the Foundation will be to support year-round engagement, coalition building, and organizing efforts of students as they work to develop diverse coalitions and encourage collaboration across differences. Learn more about Team Harmony here.
For their contributions to their high school newspaper, Sarah Vail and Toni Carton of Watertown (Mass.) High, became the first two recipients of HiE Honors on July 18, 2020.
Sarah is heading to Columbia College in Chicago and Toni will be attending Ithaca College. Neither are going into journalism, but that’s absolutely fine with us. Headliners in Education is all about the educational opportunities and real-world skills that every student gains while working in school journalism.
The learning that happens in the writing and editing, the page layout and web design, the photography and the research, the ad sales and interviewing, the planning and the deadlines -- and all to benefit a real readership -- well, there’s nothing else like it in school.
Congratulations, Sarah and Toni!
(And thanks to Signs by Tomorrow in Newton, Mass., for the Ed McMahon-sized checks.)
