Health Care SHSM Program Overview
As part of the Health Care SHSM, students will:
Gain knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, immunology, and human development
Learn and understand the diverse needs of children and the elderly
Develop fundamental skills used in healthcare including: patient assessments, vital signs, and communication techniques
Develop an understanding and appreciation for communication techniques that enable them to provide psychosocial care to their clients
Recognize the diversity of the careers in healthcare and understand the roles that each play as a component of a collaborative team in patient care
Understand and incorporate infection control standards into practice in the classroom and in several experiential learning opportunities
Obtain certifications in: First Aid/CPR-HCP, Infection Control, WHMIS. Other certificates include medical terminology, conflict resolution, back safety, mental health etc.
Students in the Health and Wellness SHSM will complete:
Three (3) health care courses
TPJ3C/M
TPJ4C/M
TOJ4C
Courses in biology, chemistry, and/or physics
One math credit
One English credit
Two Co-op credits
This program provides focused teaching to cover the interests and designations of the enrolled students. Through co-op placement, job shadowing, and reach-ahead experiences, students have the opportunity to explore a career in the health care industry.
