Grade 4

In Grade 4, students will build on their knowledge of the elements of music and related musical concepts that were introduced in Grades 1 to 3. Students will develop understanding of musical  concepts through participation in musical experiences that involve listening, creating, and performing (e.g., singing, moving, (playing instruments). We have introduced a Recorder karate program where each test and evaluation is rewarded with a Karate Belt color that is associated with a certain proficiency level.

Students are expected to bring their recorder and Music book to each class unless otherwise directed.

In Grade 4, students begin to read standard notation in the treble clef and sing or play music in two parts. They continue to create simple rhythms and melodies as accompaniments and to discover how music is organized.

We start the year off with musical theory and transition into the recorder karate program. Students are to practice diligently at least three times per week, in order to gain expertise in the reading, and playing of musical notation. Practice logs are to be signed by parents once students fulfill their practice responsibilities. Practice log forms can be found  HERE

Progress through the Recorder Karate program is being followed with hopes of some day attaining the coveted Gold Belt.

February

Musical Theory is being taught and reviewed. There will be a test at the end of this unit.

March

The Red Belt is earned through composition of a song and then performing for the class

We are working on composing our own song and playing it to earn our Red Belts.

The development of new articulation playing skills such as staccato and legato are explored. 

April

Black Belt song Camptown Races - Must be memorized for top honours.
