Performance:
- Create a YouTube instructional video, teaching guitar techniques or a Song
- Learn a classical guitar song from music notation (to their difficulty level)
- Learn a Jazz Standard from Chords and Melody (play in pairs)
- Compose a song that is not in a Major or Minor key OR in duple or triple time (i.e. 2/4, 4/4, 3/4, 6/8)
- Learn an entire guitar solo either by ear or from tab - Play to a backing track in performance
- Compose and record a song with a minimum of 4 layers of guitars (all played by you)
- Finger picking or hybrid picking - cover song - E.G. Sungha Jung…
- Arrange a pop song for multiple guitars, but one that you cannot find on the internet already done. (i.e. Guitar club on youtube)
- Learn a cover song of your choice and demonstrate 3 different ways to play the chord progression
Analysis:
- Analyze an album that has made a cultural impact (concept album, political statements, idealogical statements, musical trend statement)
- Analyze 3 guitarist instructional Youtube videos
- Concert review - either live or DVD concert
History:
- Research presentation - (research something about the guitar and history)
Examples - the origins of the guitar, different guitar shapes and their impact on the sound, historical guitar players from different cultures, guitar companies, luthiers, the use of the guitar in different cultures. etc.
- Write a discussion article on the guitar - 600 word minimum - present your writing in a cool way (i.e. blog, magazine article etc.
- Topics could include: The evolution of the guitar solo; How to choose the right guitar; Guitar maintenance; etc.
Scales:
- Pentatonic in all positions
- Major Scale in all positions
Chords:
- Major, Minor, Augmented and Diminished on sets of three strings
- Basic 7th Chord Shapes
- All barred chord shapes
Theory:
- Intervals
- Building Triads, 7th chords
- Playing and saying Major scales, in all keys.
- Major Key signatures
Performance Task:
- Independent Study/Performance
