This performance task combines the written aspect of the "Exam" and the performance aspect of the final 30% of this course.
Your task is to compose a piece of music which demonstrates your knowledge and understanding of the theory, composition, performance, notation and technology components of this course.
Your composition is going to be a quartet or a quintet, depending how many people are in your group. You will write a composition for yourself and 3 or 4 others. Please remember the skill level and the abilities of your group members.
Your composition needs to include the following criteria:
- At least 60 bars long
- Your composition must have different sections but the number of sections is up to you.
- Remember that every good song must have a catchy melody and a chord progression. So its not a bad idea to user Bach's chord progression rules if you need help with the chord progression.
- Genre/form etc. is completely up to you.
- Composition must show your performance level, it should be challenging and thoroughly demonstrates your skill level. You should know what you are capable of performing at this point.
- Be sure to write the melody so it shows off your range, dynamic capabilities, and overall musicality.
-Always remember it is way better to over achieve and fail then to under achieve and do average.
- You must include interesting dynamics, articulations, and other markings.
- Also review the 7 Elements of music, make sure your composition demonstrates your knowledge and understanding of how these effect a song. Use them wisely, and purposefully. (i.e. using a quiet dynamic when playing very high notes, is a really cool effect, but is extremely hard to do on instruments you put air through)
We will discuss and use the creative process throughout this project, in order for you to get feedback from me and feedback from your peers, it is how you use all the steps of the creative process that will help you achieve the most success throughout this performance task.
We will co-construct a rubric for both the performance and the composition. Please remember to approach this project at your skill level, for performance and for composition.
Be sure you don't procrastinate, write your song and start practicing it as soon as possible, because your mark depends on it!
Remember you have to play other people's pieces too, so please make sure you write your song quickly and get the music out to the other musicians.
