All About Drag
Known internationally as a symbol of the LGBTQ community and self-expression, drag has taken the world by storm! In honour of Pride Month, let's take a look at what drag is, when it originated, and its influences on modern media and society.
The word drag, in this context, encompasses donning the fashion geared towards the opposite gender of your own. The term Drag Queen (that we are so familiar with now) refers to a man impersonating a woman through fashion, makeup, the performing arts, and more. However, personal gender identity does not matter! Drag is an art in which anyone can participate, no matter if you are a woman, a man, non-binary, etc.!
Over the years, many incredible Queens have graced stages of the world and made their mark, but there are a few who were out-of-this-world extraordinary. Let's take a look three of these show-stopping icons!
Divine (Harris Glen Milstead)
Although her life was short, Divine packed a lifetime's worth of work in her 42 years! She is known for her many films with director and friend John Waters (such as Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble, and Hairspray), her iconic arched brow and looks that were the inspiration for The Little Mermaid's Ursula, and her unconventional and unapologetic performances. Divine's legacy is truly one-of-a-kind, encouraging drag to be different, wild, and outrageous!
RuPaul (Rupaul Andre Charles)
RuPaul is arguably one of the most famous and influential drag queens yet! Since childhood, RuPaul had a love for dressing up, the arts, and fashion, which kickstarted her incredible drag journey in the 80s. She released her first album: Supermodel of the World in 1993, which became a huge hit, landing her roles in various movies and radio shows! 2009 marked the release of her show "RuPaul's Drag Race", a reality TV show crowning America's Next Drag Superstar. This show, for over 15 years, is regarded as "it", where a queen can can prove her charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent. For her achievements, RuPaul has won 14 Emmy Awards!
Lady Bunny (Jon Marc Ingle)
Rocking her big, blonde wings, long lashes, and glitzy fashion, Lady Bunny always turns heads whenever she goes! She is a successful comedienne, actress, singer, journalist, DJ, and founder of Wigstock (an annual festival that is credited as an iconic piece of drag history. It even has a film called Wigstock: The Movie, released in 1995!). Lady bunny has performed all over the world in places like London, Las Vegas, Rome, Paris, Tokyo, Montreal, and more! She's credited as an icon who entertains the masses, which is even mentioned in the show "Will and Grace". Brace yourself for the impact of Lady Bunny!
It is hard to pin an exact date on the start of drag performances. The concept of cross-dressing was as early as Ancient Greece all the way to Shakespearean times (16th and 17th century) when only men were permitted to perform in theatre, which meant they took on female roles! However, the modern idea of performance drag that we know today became popular in the 20th century, with the rises of stars like Julienne Eltinge, Vesta Tilley (a male impersonator!), RuPaul, Lady Bunny, Divine, and others. Now, in the 21st century, thanks to social media and widely-loved media such as "RuPaul's Drag Race", drag is accepted as an international form of self-expression and entertainment!
Each year since 1999, professionals at Pantone do intense research on global trends, attitudes, culture, and more to decide upon a colour that best represents the upcoming year. That colour then influences and sets the tone of everything made and displayed for the upcoming year. For this year, 2025, the Colour of the Year is Mocha Mousse. It is said to be a warm, rich colour, one to “answer our desire for comfort”.

What Were They Thinking?
Each week, a new wacky, unusual, or unique fashion trend (or item) will be added, along with background information about their creation and/or influence. Stay tuned for additions!
The hobble skirt (circa early 1900s) is a long, ankle-length, skirt that often varied in colour, pattern, and design. Some were so tight and restrictive that women had to take incredibly small steps to walk, greatly impacting their ability to get around. Middle and lower-class women could not afford to have their movement restricted the way upper-class women could, so they added things like slits and buttons. By 1910, some street cars in Northern America added a small 6-inch step so that women could safely board. It is said by some that these tight skirts were created as a way to figuratively and literally restrict women, as more and more women were fighting for equality, freedom, and practical clothing. However, some argue it was simply a trend of the time. Look at the articles listed below for more!
Medium
In the fashion world, optical illusion fashion is quite popular, where materials are made to look like something they aren't (or shouldn't be, some might claim). Take these Louis Vuitton heels, for example. The intention was to create something one-of-a-kind and humorous. Essentially, not something the average person would wear! Vogue
During Balenciaga's Winter 2024 Runway show, this tape bracelet (officially called the "Gaffer Bangle") was revealed. Immediately, controversy around it flooded the internet, especially on TikTok. However, this is not the first time Balenciaga has made an unconventional fashion piece! In fact, they have made items that are considered weirder than this bracelet over the years.
