Here's a brief note of what we're currently working on in class.

Language

We're currently working on:

  • Literary Devices

    • identifying and using literacy and poetic devices (e.g., metaphors, alliteration)

    • creating works using different types and forms (e.g., acrostic, limericks)

    • creating meaningful work (e.g., writing about global issues) through creativity using the writing process

We're always working on:

  • word work
  • reading/comprehension strategies
  • grammar and language rules
  • communication skills (speaking and listening)

Math

We're currently working on:

  • Measurement

  • Surface area and Volume

  • Geometric Reasoning

    • similarities (i.e., angles and propotional side lengths)

    • tessellations and transformations (e.g, translation, rotation)

    • Pythagorean theorem

  • Algebraic Expressions

    • monomials, binomials, coefficients

We're always working on:

  • automatic recall of operations
  • representing mathematic concepts
  • problem-solving (particularily with words)
  • developing a greater relationship to math

Science

We're currently working on:

  • Characteristics of Fluids

    • Ability to flow

    • Particle Theory

  • Viscosity

    • Adhesion vs. Cohesion

  • Buoyancy

    • Archimedes' Principle

  • Density

    • Density = Mass/Volume

The Arts

    • Learning to engage in role/character

History

We're currently working on:

  • Canada 1850 ~ 1914

    • Road to Confederation

    • Experiences of different colonies and people groups

    • Expanding West (e.g., Manitoba)

We've worked on:

  • Global Inequalities: Economic Development and Quality of Life

    • Population pyramids

    • Measurement of quality (e.g., HDI, access to healthcare, drinking water)

    • Factors affecting economy (e.g., access to resources, GDP)

Health

We're currently working on:

  • Risk Reducing Behaviours

    • Understanding risks and consquences (including violence)

    • Concussions and Injury prevention

We've worked on:

  • Mental Health Literacy
    • Strategies to help us enhance our ability to face challenges in life

    • Counteracting stigma around mental health

    • Healthy Eating Habits

      • Micronutrients/Macronutrients
