In order to follow this quick tutorial, you'll need to have the CloudConvert app connected to your Gooogle Drive. You can find out how to connect apps to your drive here.

create animated gifs with short videos stored in google drive

If you're like me, you probably have some video files living in your Google Drive. Maybe you captured a cool moment during a science lesson, or made a tutorial video for a web-based tool.

Why not turn that little video into a looping, low-file size animated GIF?

You may know animated GIFs as the short, looping images that have taken over the interwebs in recent years. These quick video bits are easily displayed on mobile devices, making them a great way to share a lot of information in a short amount of time.

Creating an animated GIF within your Google Drive is easy:

  • First, upload the video file you'd like to turn into an animated GIF. Remember: GIFs work best with short videos. If you need a reminder on how to upload a file to your Drive, just check out the GIF above!

  • After file is uploaded, right-click on it, and select Open with. From the resulting menu, choose CloudConvert.

  • This will open a new tab that takes you to CloudConvert, an awesome tool for converting ANY file in your Google Drive to any other kind of file (within reason, of course).

  • In this screen, click the little grey box next to the wrench. This will let you choose what kind of file you want to convert to. Notice all of the options! For our purposes now, though, click image, and then select gif.

  • Finally, click the giant red Start Conversion button on the bottom of the page. Make sure that the box next to Save file to my Google Drive is checked.

At this point your video is automatically saved to your Google Drive after it is converted, leaving you with a new copy of the file in animated GIF format.

The GIF can be shared like any other file in Google Drive. You can post it to your class stream in Google Classroom, embed it in a Google Site, or even insert it into a Google Doc or Slide!

IMPORTANT NOTE: try to keep your video clips under 20 sec. Videos longer than that tend to error when converting.
