1st Place

The First Place winner will have the opportunity to choose between a Nintendo Switch, an iPad, and a Kodak digital camera. Their work will also be published in a scholarly journal, the George Washington Journal of Ethics in Publishing.

2nd and 3rd

Second and Third Place winners will get a $50 gift card, their designs printed on merchandise, and their work will be published in the George Washington Journal of Ethics in Publishing.

Honorable Mentions

The Honorable Mentions, or 4th and 5th Place winners, will have their work printed on merchandise and will be published in the George Washington Journal of Ethics in Publishing.

Choose ONE of the magazine covers from BLK Magazine below and use it as inspiration to create a companion cover that could be paired with it.

Formatting Requirements:

Dimensions must be 8.5 inches X 11 inches
Submissions must include the Black Stripe Logo (download below):
- Logo in Black (PNG)
- Logo in White (PNG)
Designs must be submitted via the Submission Form linked below
Designs may use any variation of color, font, shapes, etc.

Eligibility:

Participants must be students in the Howard County Public School System
Participants must be in grades 7-12
Deadline EXTENEDED to June 10th @ 11:59PM!

Judging Criteria

Each of the criteria below will be scored out of 10 points:

(1) Originality
- Does the new cover simply imitate the original cover, or does it add or transform the concept in a meaningful way to create an original design?
(2) Functionality
- Is the design readable? Can the viewer discern the design's content? Is the design balanced? Is it clear that it is meant to be a magazine cover?
(3) Relevance
- How does the student's design relate to the original BLK cover? Is it historically, culturally, or artistically relevant?
(4) Aesthetics
- Are the elements (color, shapes, layers, effects, etc.) of the design harmonious? Do they work together to convey an overall message or aesthetic? Is the design visually satisfying to the viewer?
(5) Social Value
- In what way does this design have a positive impact on society or the viewer?
