How much do I make as a substitute?

Substitute teacher positions pay $135/day and substitute instructional assistant positions pay $108.75/day.

What should I do if I experience difficulty with Frontline?

HCPS does not support the Frontline app from a technical stand point, but if you are having trouble with frontlineeducation.com, always be sure to clear your browsing history and make sure you are using Chrome or Edge.  If you are still having trouble, make the "Forgot..." selection for Frontline to send both your username and password.

Should I clock in and out at the schools?

You will want to follow the individual schools check in process at the school's main office.  However, after picking up a position in Frontline, there is never a need to "clock in" at a school as your day and time is already recorded in Frontline.

What should I wear when I go to a school to substitute?

The dress code is business casual.

What should I expect following orientation?

Upon completing orientation you will receive an informational email that has an orientation survey for you to complete.   Once you complete the survey you will receive an email directly from Frontline with the directions for how set up your account, so you can begin to pick up substitute assignments.  On the Monday following orientation, you will receive an email with your KRONOS (paystub) ID.  On the Tuesday following orientation, your ID badge will be available for pick up at our Ashland School Board Office.  You can call 804-365-4500 to confirm.

What assignments should I pick up in Frontline?

You can pick up any assignment you are interested in working in.  For those new to substituting, we recommend that you consider starting out with a few days as an instructional assistant substitute.  You may also want to consider half-day positions.

What happens on days schools have early release?

HCPS expects substitutes to work their full schedule on early release days.  When students have left for the day, check with the front office of the school to see what else you can do to assist.

Are there virtual substitute jobs I can pick up in Frontline?

There are no daily substitute positions to pick up in Frontline for our online school.  If you do see a post in Frontline for the online school, please disregard.

How many times do I need to substitute to keep my substitute status with Hanover County Public Schools?

HCPS requires substitutes to work 21.75 hours/school year, but substitutes do not work during the summer.  If you work 21.75 hours, you are automatically carried over to the next school year.
