Bienvenidos!
Harlingen CISD proudly hosted two transformative student conferences this spring designed to empower emergent bilingual freshmen students through cultural celebration, leadership development, and motivational engagement. Thanks to the generous support of the Raul Tijerina, Jr. Foundation, the Power of La Quinceañera and Power of the Knockout conferences brought together nearly 150 students from Dr. Abraham P. Cano Freshman Academy for two memorable days focused on goal-setting, identity, and future success.
The Power of La Quinceañera conference, held on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, welcomed 57 freshman girls to an experience that acknowledged the cultural milestone of turning fifteen while emphasizing the power of personal reflection, confidence, and forward-thinking. Just one day later, the Power of the Knockout conference brought together 92 freshman boys for an equally impactful day of learning and empowerment.
Both events were filled with dynamic speakers, engaging breakout sessions, and opportunities for students to connect with mentors and one another.
“Our goal was to make sure every student felt seen, supported, and inspired, and that’s exactly what happened,” said Norma G. Garcia, Director of Multi-Language. “The feedback from students and families was overwhelmingly positive. These events weren’t just conferences, they were milestones in their high school journey.”
The student voice was at the heart of both days. Participants shared that they walked away feeling motivated to set goals, make thoughtful choices, and believe in their potential. The interactive sessions highlighted key themes like perseverance, self-worth, financial literacy, and the importance of embracing their bilingual and bicultural identities.
“These conferences have created lasting memories and meaningful connections for our students,” said Mrs. Garcia. “They gave our students the space to be proud of who they are and dream about who they can become.”
Building confidence and pride in who students are is very important for their success. These conferences helped students feel strong, motivated, and ready to lead. Harlingen CISD is committed to giving students chances to grow and reach their dreams. We thank the Raul Tijerina Jr. Foundation for their ongoing support, which made these events possible and helps our students succeed.
