What is Dual Enrollment?
Dual Enrollment is a special program that allows you, as a high school student, to take college courses while you’re still in high school. At Dr. Abraham P. Cano Freshman Academy, we partner with Texas Southmost College (TSC) in Brownsville to give you the opportunity to earn both high school and college credit at the same time.
Why is Dual Enrollment Beneficial?
Save Money – Taking college courses now means fewer classes (and tuition costs) later. You’re getting a head start on college without the big price tag.
Save Time – You can graduate from college earlier or take lighter course loads when you get there, freeing up time for internships, jobs, or other opportunities. Students pursuing graduate degrees can also start sooner.
Transferable Credits – The college credits you earn through TSC can be applied not only to colleges and universities across Texas, but also to many institutions across the country. Speak to your College Advisor about course transferability.
Experience College Early – You’ll get a taste of college-level learning, build strong study habits, and develop the confidence needed to succeed after high school.
Stand Out – Having college credit on your transcript shows universities (and even future employers) that you are motivated, hardworking, and ready to take on challenges.
Why Start in 9th Grade?
The earlier you begin exploring dual enrollment, the more time you have to plan, prepare, and take advantage of this opportunity. By the time you graduate, you could already be well on your way to completing a degree or certificate.
Remember: The decision to take dual enrollment courses should not be taken lightly. These rigorous courses follow a college curriculum designed by our partnering institution and require much time, effort, and dedication. Dual Enrollment is more than just earning credits early—it’s an investment in your future. Every course you complete now is one less class you’ll have to take (and pay for) later.
