An invention to assist the visually impaired in movement; a Service Learning endeavour to integrate migrant workers into the Singapore community; an app that promotes hawker culture to youths - what do these have in common? For one, they are all projects initiated and executed by Hwa Chongians.
Project Work (PW) is a learning experience that aims to provide students with the opportunity to synthesise knowledge from various areas of learning, and to critically and creatively apply it to real-life situations. This process, which enhances students’ knowledge and enables them to acquire skills like collaboration, communication and independent learning, prepares them for lifelong learning and the future challenges ahead.
Under the PW programme, students work collaboratively on any area of interest, be it contribution to the community, conducting scientific, humanities or linguistic research and shedding light on an academic topic or solving a current societal issue and more. Students undergo training in basic research skills in Secondary One.
In Secondary Two, they embark on a year-long journey of imaginative and innovative inquiry under the guidance of their teacher- or expert-mentors.
At the upper secondary levels, students may continue to enhance their mastery of research skills through Project Work or develop their passion in other areas of learning of their choice. Project Work forms a springboard for the exploration of interests and passions while others lead students towards platforms like the International Science & Engineering Fair and the MOE’s Humanities and Social Sciences Research Programme Symposium.

"As part of Hwa Chong's service learning programmes which encourage a culture of work and problem-solving in the community, I took up Project Affinity in 2026 and currently serve as Admin I/C. Service learning, at its core, means not just simply working to help the communities around us and close to us but more importantly, learning the variety of issues and struggles of people who walk amongst us. This is meaningful because of the perspective which it is able to provide us; many of us are privileged, and Service Learning teaches us the value of always staying true to our roots and helping those around us, embodying the value of 己立立人,己达达人.
As part of my project, I volunteer with a kids' club which allows me and my team members to curate and co-create activities with the children which we work with, to help them grow and flourish into confident members of society. As an I/C within the project, I have learnt many things such as liaison skills with beneficiaries and being willing to meet them where they are to create change not just for the sake of numbers but for real impact. But most importantly, the heart of service lies within us for us to discover; Hwa Chong gave me the opportunity to give back to my community and to help out those whom I care for and hope to see succeed together in this society built by common benefit."
