English Equity Fellows

The English Department created an English Equity fellowship that facilitates a year-long study of equitable grading practices for 10 faculty members (a combination of full-time and part-time).  Using the book Grading for Equity: What It Is, Why It Matters, and How It Can Transform Schools and Classrooms by Joe Feldman, the English Equity fellowship consists of eight workshops corresponding to chapters in the text plus several workshops for the assessment of deliverables/teaching artifacts. The substantial revision of grading practices has come to be considered essential in bridging the equity gap, positively impacting the learning experiences and outcomes of first-generation, lower-income, and other underrepresented students. It’s imperative that the English Department assess students’ work with criteria that represent diverse racial demographics corresponding to HCC students’ own identities.
