Muñiz, J. (2019, March 28). Culturally responsive teaching. New America. https://www.newamerica.org/education-policy/reports/culturally-responsive-teaching/.
What makes up Culturally Responsive (and hopefully Sustaining) Teaching (CRST)? As we explore and grow in this aspect of our practice, using a framework invites us to consider multiple dimensions, connect our work to a body of literature and evidence base, and share common vocabulary.
HCC ESOL teachers found Muñiz' (2019) framework to be helpful in orienting us. These 8 Core Competencies for Culturally Responsive Teaching describe what culturally responsive teachers know and do. "Educators who practice CRT set rigorous learning objectives for all of their students and they continually build helpful bridges between what students need to learn and their heritage, lived realities, and the issues they care about. In short, culturally responsive teaching is about weaving together rigor and relevance."
We all come to this space as learners. We look forward to learning from each other, from students, from our communities, from other educators, and through exploring challenges in service of equity and student success.
You are invited to explore and contribute! Ideas and resources are organized by competency below. We expect this thinking to continue to grow through our collective and individual work.
