Reading is the foundation of all that your child will learn in school, not just this year, but in all the grades to come. Because reading is so important, I try to instill a love for reading by making reading fun and exciting. Students will read a variety of high interest reading materials that tie in with all curriculum areas.
Journeys HMH Reading Series
Journeys is a comprehensive K-6 English language arts program. It provides an instructional system for reading both literature and informational texts, for acquiring foundational skills, and for developing mastery of speaking, listening and writing.
Novel Studies
We will also be using novels as our literature textbooks. These story selections give students the opportunity to experience reading through high-interest, multilevel literature. Students will develop Language Arts competency through lessons and activities for reading strategies, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, listening, and speaking. Our 4th grade novels include Island of the Blue Dolphins and By The Great Horn Spoon.
Scholastic News
Every week, Scholastic News magazine brings curriculum-connected nonfiction into our class! Scholastic News is the only current events and nonfiction magazine specifically designed for the fourth-grade classroom. Each beautiful, full-color issue features concise informational texts that are as compelling as they are complex.
Accelerated Reader
As part of our reading curriculum we have always encouraged independent reading. At Moffett, students have the opportunity to excel in independent reading through the Accelerated Reader (AR) Program. AR is an invaluable supplemental reading practice program, which enhances comprehension skills in books that the children read on their own.
BFF
Moffett's Best Foot Forward (BFF) program is a supplemental reading program available to 1st through 5th graders. Students get to check out a book from the BFF Library, which is separate and independent from the school library. After they have read the book, they complete an interview, conducted by a BFF Volunteer. The students receive credits for each successful interview, and they receive prizes for every 10 book credits earned. Students may go to BFF during our Morning Workshop, Recess, or Lunch Recess.
Writing
Effective writing starts with clear thinking. I have seen great success building the writing skills students will need for college and career success with Write from the Beginning…and Beyond. It builds on the power of Thinking Maps to establish a school-wide focus on effective writing across all grade levels and content areas. With Write from the Beginning…and Beyond, teachers don’t just follow a program—they build their capacity as writing teachers. Our whole-school approach helps students internalize the skills and strategies used by effective writers, so they can apply them in academic discourse wherever their paths take them. Learning the writing process is also a focus this year. Your child will write narratives, informational texts, and opinion essays, as well as explanations, summaries, and responses to literature. Students will write multi-paragraph essays containing an opening and a closing paragraph. In each type of writing you will see an increasing use of supporting details and descriptive language as well as a variance in sentence patterns.
Thinking Maps
Thinking Maps is a language of eight visual patterns each based on a fundamental thinking process. Thinking Maps are used individually and in combination across every grade level and curriculum area as an integrated set of tools for life-long learning. This program is an integral part of writing program, Write From the Beginning, at Moffett School. The skills used with Thinking Maps can be done with just paper and pencil. Below are examples of Thinking Map templates.
Grammar and Spelling
Grammar and Spelling skills are taught as part of the writing process. These skills are also integrated into each Reading unit. There will be one or two grammar and/or spelling skills presented each writing week. In addition, throughout the week, students will review a mentor text to practice grammar, usage, and mechanics.
Handwriting
Learning to write in cursive was one of the highlights of third grade. Throughout 4th grade, we will be polishing cursive writing. Handwriting is very difficult to grade because each person has an individual style of writing. I am not as concerned with having a student make "picture perfect" letters as I am with developing writing that is legible and neat.
We will be using the My Math program for 4th grade. Students will at times work from consumable workbooks, engage in regular number talks, share their thinking through problem solving, and work through the rigorous Jiji puzzles.
