Information Sheet~ How to change a car tyre?
Never change a flat tyre on a motorway or dual carriageway. If you experience car trouble when on a motorway, park as far left on the hard shoulder as possible and call the Gardaí or your breakdown assistance provider.
What you need…
A car jack
A wheel wrench
A spare tyre
Wheel nut removal tool
Wheel chocks/bricks to stop your car from rolling when it’s on the car jack
Your car manufacturer’s manual
If you have these they might come in handy…
A warning triangle
A flashlight
A high visibility vest
Pair of gloves
Steps~
Stop in a safe place: Before proceeding to change your tyre stop in a safe place with a hard and flat surface. Turn on and keep on your hazard lights. Do not park on the grass. Park your car as far away from the road as possible.
Warn other drivers: When stopped make sure your flashers are on and put out the warning triangle roughly 3-4 car lengths behind you.
Secure your car's position: Turn off your car's ignition, pull up the handbrake and put the car in gear. Take the keys out of the ignition and keep them in your pocket. If you have chocks or bricks place them under the wheels to ensure your car doesn't roll.
Position the Jack: Get your jack and put it at a 90 degree angle to the road surface. If you look at your car's manual it will show you where to place your jack. Each car will vary. Once the jack is secure and correctly in place, raise the jack enough so that it's supporting the car, but not actually lifting the car up. This is because you'll need to loosen the wheel nuts first.
Remove the Hubcap and loosen wheel nuts: Look in the boot of your car and get out your spare tyre and tool kit supplied with your car. Get the wrench to remove the hubcap first. Then turn the wheel nuts anti clockwise a few times until you can start to turn them with your hands.
Raise your car: Use the jack and raise your car roughly about 10cm off the ground.
Remove your tyre: Fully Loosen the wheel nuts while keeping the tyre in position. Remove the top nut last so you can easily use both hands to lift away the tyre.
Spare Tyre: Make sure no rust is on your tyre. Make sure to align the rim of the tyre with the wheel bolts.
Put on wheel nuts: Once the tyre is positioned correctly hand tighten the nuts. Tighten the diagonals look at the drawing below...
Lower the car and tighten the nuts: Lower your car until the tyre just about touches the ground. Now you can tighten the wheel nuts with your wheel wrench.
With a spare tyre you shouldn’t drive any faster than 80 km/h on a spare tyre and you should make sure to check your tyre pressure regularly.
