2017/2018 School Year

10/26/17:

We wrapped up the tennis unit today. Students learned about various hits including forehand, backhand, serving, and smashing. Students were able to apply game play strategies during a mini tournament. Tennis is a great example of a lifelong sport students can play as adults. Next unit will be badminton.

10/18/17:

This week we are beginning the recreational unit Bocce Ball. Although there is less fitness involved, this unit involves teamwork, strategy, and is a simple recreational game students can play outside of Physical Education. The students really enjoy the game! Bocce ball is a good break from the stressors middle school students face on a daily basis. Our PE department believes it is imperative student's are exposed to multiple types of fitness, recreational activities, and team sports in order to allow students to participate in a wide variety of activities.

We will also be adding tennis next week, which is a great lifelong sport students can play with minimal equipment.

10/09/17:

We wrapped up the archery unit. The students did an amazing job improving their hand/eye coordination, technique, and understanding of various ways to adjust their aim, sighting, and overall skills. We are starting 2 hand touch football where students will focus on throwing, catching, running routes, small-sided game play, and learn offensive/defensive strategies. We also will have students perform 1 fitness day working on their anaerobic capacity, speed/agility, which fits with our football unit.

9/27/17:

Students have been working on archery. They have really enjoyed the unit so far. Students are working on archery technique, proper sighting, teamwork, safety, and sportsmanship. I am really impressed with how quick students are progressing. We will be running a pacer fitness test tomorrow which will help establish student's baseline aerobic capacity/cardiovascular endurance. Students will then set their goals for spring fitness testing.

9/19/17:

Students began their speedball unit this week which comprises hand ball, soccer, team work, and advanced offensive and defensive strategies. Students practiced skill work and will apply the skill work towards game play starting tomorrow. In addition, students have begun using their heart rate monitors. They were hesitant at first, but now love the instant feedback! Heart rate monitors help students improve their fitness levels, self adjust their intensity, and individualize student's fitness.

9/14/17:

Students finished their soccer unit with a mini soccer tournament. I am very proud of their improvements in applying offensive strategies, skill development, and team cooperation! Students learned the importance of creating open space, ball reversal, possession, and applying proper dribbling, passing, and shooting technique in a dynamic setting. Great start to the school year!
