Research with Dr. David Lampert

Dr. David Lampert is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering at IIT. Dr. Lampert's research focuses on applying novel computing and chemistry methods to address environmental sustainability challenges, particularly in the area of water quality. Dr. Lampert is currently researching the relationships between nutrients and harmful algal blooms (HABs), which involves hydrologic modeling of nutrient runoff and HAB formation rates and observations with unmanned systems. Another one of Dr. Lampert's research areas is in water treatment using membrane filtration processes for desalination and recovery of valuable materials. Dr. Lampert is also studying "smart" wastewater and stormwater approaches using sensing and data tools with machine learning. Finally, Dr. Lampert has several ongoing projects related to the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in contaminated areas with sponsorship from the U.S. Geological Survey and U.S. EPA.

Research with Dr. Brent Stephens

Dr. Stephens presented his research by the Built Environment Research Group at IIT, which works on energy and air quality issues in the built environment, primarily focused on understand and controlling indoor air pollutants inside buildings. He discussed their work simulating COVID-19 transmission and testing air cleaners that have become popular since the importance of aerosol transmission of COVID-19 became clear.
