Student athletes must participate in a tryout in order to be on a team.
Roster decisions are made based on the number of students trying out, their performance during tryouts, and their assessed skill-level by the coach.
The coaches reserve the right to choose the group of students they believe that will best complete a cohesive team.
Earning a spot on a team one year does not guarantee a position on the same team for any subsequent year. Students must try out for their respective sport each year.
Red Shirts - Coaches may designate a player as a Red Shirt (Practice Squad) if they are close to making the team skill-wise but would benefit from additional development. Red Shirt players are still part of the program and are expected to attend practices and home games to continue learning and improving. However, they do not play in official games or travel with the team.
A participation fee determined by the financial committee at the beginning of the school year will be assessed by the business office. Currently, the fees are as follows:
Varsity - $200/sport
Junior Varsity - $175/sport
Intermediate - $175/sport
Elementary - $75/sport
Student athletes and parents must coordinate with the HMA business office to pay the set fee by the first game to be eligible to play. Payments can be made HERE.
On select years, varsity teams may participate in a mainland or neighbor island tournament trips. This trip will also include additional fees that must be paid for the athlete to attend.
If a student-athlete is designated as a Red Shirt following tryouts, they are not required to pay the participation fee. The fee will only be applied if the player is later added to the official roster.
To participate in athletics, students must not have multiple D’s or one F on their progress report.
Eligibility will be checked each Monday. Turning in late work on Monday to make a change for the week is not an option. However, each situation will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
If a student is found to be below the academic eligibility requirement, they will be considered “Yellow Flagged” for one week. If the student athlete fails to bring their grade up after the “Yellow Flag” phase, they will be “Red Flagged.” At each phase a notice will be sent to both the parent and the student.
Yellow Flag – This is a warning that the student is below the academic eligibility standard. The student athlete will still be eligible to participate in practices and games. (1 week period)
Red Flag – The student athlete will not be eligible to participate in practices or games. The student athlete will have this week to meet the academic eligibility requirements. If the student fails to meet the requirements by the following Monday, they will remain in the Red Flag phase. (1 week period)
If the student athlete fails to meet the academic eligibility standard for four consecutive weeks - Yellow Flag week, Red Flag week, and two additional Red Flag weeks, they will be automatically withdrawn from the team.
A student athlete can automatically return to being “unflagged” from any phase on Mondays if they meet the academic eligibility standard.
Each year, grade checks will start the week after Labor Day weekend.
Varsity & Junior Varsity: Student-athletes earn 0.25 Physical Education credit hours for each season they participate in a school sport.
Elementary & Intermediate: Student-athletes do not receive Physical Education credit for participation in school sports.
Graduation Requirement: A total of 3.0 Physical Education credit hours are required to graduate from Hawaiian Mission Academy.
Credit Eligibility: To earn Physical Education credit for a sport, a student-athlete must complete the entire season in good standing. Credit will not be awarded if the athlete is removed from the team due to academic ineligibility, disciplinary action, or other forms of school-related punishment.
Student athletes are expected to attend all scheduled practices and games, unless excused by an illness or injury.
Student athletes are expected to communicate with the coach if they are unable to attend a practice or game.
Student athletes are expected to commit to the athletic schedule when they join a team. This includes being at games or practices during holiday breaks. (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break)
Student athletes are expected to arrive on time to games and practices. If they are late, they are subject to losing playing time in the following game.
Student athletes who have been given an unexcused absence for the day by the front office will be ineligible to play that day.
Students who miss class due to illness will be ineligible to play or practice that day.
If a student athlete must miss class due to a game or tournament, they must notify the teachers of the periods they miss and fill out a pre-arranged absence form. The form must be submitted it to the Athletic Director.
Coaches are responsible for watching your student and cannot leave them unsupervised. Please ensure you contact the coach ASAP if you cannot pick them on time.
Thank you for respecting our closed-gym policy during practices. This policy means that only athletes and coaches are allowed in the gym during practice times. It helps students stay focused, encourages team bonding, and allows coaches to give instruction and feedback more effectively without distractions.
Hawaiian Mission Academy encourages student-athletes and their families to address concerns in a respectful and constructive manner. The following process outlines the appropriate steps for resolving grievances related to athletics:
Student-athletes and parents should first speak directly with the coach to address any concerns. Open and honest communication at this level often leads to the quickest and most effective resolution.
If the issue is not resolved after meeting with the coach, the student-athlete or parent may request a meeting with the Athletic Director. The Athletic Director will review the concern and determine any necessary next steps. Parents/guardians should be included in this meeting if appropriate.
If the concern remains unresolved, the student-athlete or parent may appeal to the school principal. The principal will review all relevant information and render a decision.
In cases involving more serious or unresolved concerns, a formal written appeal may be submitted to the HMA Student Care Committee. The committee includes school administration and faculty not directly involved in the situation. The committee’s decision will be final.
Please Note:
Grievances related solely to playing time will not be reviewed unless they involve policy violations or issues of fairness.
All concerns must be addressed respectfully and through the proper chain of communication.
Anonymous complaints will not be considered unless they involve issues of safety or misconduct.
At Hawaiian Mission Academy, we recognize student-athletes who demonstrate excellence, growth, and character through end-of-season awards. These awards are selected by coaches and are intended to honor outstanding contributions both on and off the court or field. An awards ceremony will be held at the conclusion of each academic year. In addition to the end-of-season awards listed below, the Hirayama Athlete of the Year will also be announced.
