Hoʻōla ʻĀina Pilipili is an educational initiative as a part of the Mauli Ola Initiative at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa College of Education centering ʻāina-based learning, healing, and ʻŌiwi leadership in educational spaces.
Hoʻōla ʻĀina Pilipili is an accessible community garden offering monthly community workdays, educational events, ʻāina-based education, research opportunities, and more!
HOʻŌLA
"To give life, restore, and heal"
Although Mānoa is known for its wet climate and lush greenery, the ʻāina (land) of Hoʻōla ʻĀina Pilipili used to be dry, barren, and often called the "dead zone".
The Hawaiian word hoʻōla means to "to give life, restore, and heal".
Similarly, our mission was not only to create an accessible educational space but also to restore the ʻāina back to its original state. Creating a thriving garden full of herbs, foods, and medicine for the community. Starting in 2022, our Mala is currently on its 3rd year of growth thanks to the hard work of our team, community members, and volunteers!
PiliPili
Our namesake, Pilipili, comes from the name of the ʻāina (land) of which Hoʻōla ʻĀina Pilipili sits on.
Hoʻōla ʻĀina Pilipili is located in the ʻili (sub-land division) of Pilipili, ahupuaʻa (land division from mountain to sea) of Waikīkī, in the moku (district) of Kona, on the mokupuni (island) of Oʻahu.
