Not all registration issues/error messages can be "fixed"---sometimes an error is the system's way of telling you a course is not appropriate for you.
Sometimes you are unable to get into a class because it is restricted (maybe to students with a specific major) or you have not met the prerequisites (i.e., you did not complete a required class, or achieve a certain placement exam score).
Below are a list of some common things students may see while registering for the first time and why they might be seeing it:
Check for "drop ins"/"Kiosk"/"Express Advising" sessions via Zoom for quick registration questions (< 5min) the week of registration:
Link will be posted in the banner at the top of the page. Drop ins/Kiosk are first-come first served, so you may be waiting for up to 15 minutes.
STAR won't let me register for any classes!
Make sure itʻs your time to register (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTWH2AAURTU). Remember the time is in Hawaiʻi time if youʻre not in the islands currently.
Make sure you donʻt have any holds that take place before or on your registration date (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=va_MB3ifK9k)
The section I wanted is full, what should I do?
All students should end July 21-25 week with a full set of 15-16 credits registered. (see your assigned time)
In most cases, if one of your classes is full, you should either
(1) find another section of the class that has open seats, or
(2) go to your backup list and select another course.
(3, optional) You may also then choose to Waitlist for your preferred section (see below).
What is a Waitlist? (See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2DCTKNISE0). However, waitlisting is only a good option if (1) you are able to monitor your @hawaii.edu email daily and (2) you are ok potentially not getting into that waitlisted class at all (the waitlist is a potential timesaver but not a guarantee).
Remember, if a spot opens up in the class and you are the first person on the waitlist, STAR will email you and youʻll have 24 hours to accept the open seat. If you miss that window you would be removed from the waitlist and STAR would offer the seat to the next person on the waitlist.
Since the waitlist ins not guaranteed, we recommend you register for a backup AND do a waitlist, rather than solely waitlisting (ie., BUS 250 section 004 filled, but there are open spots on the waitlist for that section; you should register for an open seat in another section that fits your schedule and then waitlist for section 004 if you want.)
For a complete list of Waitlist FAQs, see: https://manoa.hawaii.edu/registrar/registration/waitlist-faqs/
I can't get into a business class!
For the most part, the courses in your first two years are pre-business core requirements and general education requirements. This is especially true of your first semester. Please be sure to read prerequisites for your courses.
Some students try to register for classes that are not open to first-year students. We often get many emails about the following classes, especially:
ACC 200 ("Introduction to Accounting I")=this is only open to registration by students who have completed 30 credits (if you average 15 credits per semester, you will achieve this by the end of your first year, so you can take ACC 200 starting in your second year;
ACC 210 has a prereq of completing ACC 200, so is usually taken in the second semester of sophomore year
BUS 200 ("Intro to Business")=This is only open to students in the DAP program.
BUS 209 is open to students who complete ACC 200 and ENG 100, so often taken in the second semester of sophomore year
