Advisor: Deborah Surian

Meeting Dates: Tuesdays, 3:00 PM, HS Library

The Ethics Bowl Club is open to all high school students in grades 9-12. All students will be able to take part in the ethical study of 16 societal dilemmas, published yearly by the University of North Carolina Parr Center for Ethics. The annual LI HS Ethics Bowl is held at Hofstra, whereby Hauppauge Teams compete against other high schools from across the Tri -State area. Students will be able to practice productive dialogue in a Socratic setting. Students will be introduced to basic philosophical theory, which as is an essential part of this club. Ethical questions/dilemmas concerning cheating, plagiarism, peer pressure, use and abuse of social media, privacy, relationship responsibilities, will be discussed. However, political and social issues — free speech, gun control, and bioethical issues, such as cloning, parental consent, and stem cell research, are of great interest to teenagers, and are also included.

Students are NOT required to participate in the Ethics Bowl Competition.
