Using Minecraft Education edition's coding, I created a huge cobblestone castle because I was inspired by classmates from last semester. When I witnessed my peers make a castle using the code agent I thought it was really cool and felt that I had the opportunity to make something even better. I felt like building a castle rather than other structures because I though it was classic, and would be a nice, but simple way to introduce myself to coding, and would help me better understand the basics of coding because I was building something simple.
During this process, I learned how to use code blocks in Minecraft, what the purpose of coding was, how they could be changed to help me in the way I wanted it to, and that they're very useful and are able to do almost anything. It took me a couple days to get used to coding, but once I understood it, I created my own code, and solved my own problems successfully. A video I watched that helped me with coding was: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mD0dQQ9wMho , and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nosWBCO_mvY
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to Empowered learner because I was motivated to learn more about Minecraft coding after I had already failed to make a successful piece of code. Even when I was at home I would think of ways I could code, I tested different sets of code, and watched tutorial videos. As soon as I looked at someone's example code, I began implementing similar code blocks into my own, and started to understand how they worked, all I wanted to do was learn more about the code blocks, and I created my own sets/pieces of code that were successful.
A challenge I overcame on this project was coding the agent. I was able to code by watching tutorials, using other peoples' examples, and testing out different code blocks. It took some time to get used to coding, but after making different code pieces, I learned how the code blocks work. The tutorials listed above helped me get started, after that I used this piece of code that was shared on MakeCode to create other sets of code (my modified version):
Given a chance to do this again, I would change the blocks I used, and I would make a different structure. The reason why I would change it is because this project was mainly just to learn more about coding, and get a better understanding of the basics. Another reason why I would change it is because the castle I built was a simple structure typically for beginners, and the only block I used was cobblestone, so I felt like I could've added more detail, and used more than just one block for the entire castle.
Hastings High School Career and Technical Education Program offers Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, Marketing. My project connects to the Computer Programming CTE program at Hastings High School. My project connects to careers in Engineering Design. My project ties to these two careers because I overcame many challenges during this project. I had to learn how to code, which seemed difficult at first, but when I began to understand it, I was able to use that basic knowledge of coding to create my own code without any help, and through the engineering design process. There were only a limited amount of code blocks, but there were still plenty that I could manipulate to form it into what I wanted.
