In my project, I am working by myself. The materials that I need for my project are Tinkercad, a computer, a laser cutter, and a piece of wood. I plan to create a coaster with my tools and do my best to make my best. Unique properties that my coaster will have include a carving of a famous quote (I have not yet decided what one), the name of the person who said the quote, a round circle for the engravings to be in. The large circle will also be the main base of the coaster.
In this image, you can see the coaster in all of its beauty. There is an engraving in the nice dark wood that I used. I believe that I did great to make this look good, but I would make it more round if I could.
In this video, you can see that the coaster has turned out well, with the bottle sitting nicely on top of the creation. The engraving shown is cut nicely into the coaster, but not far enough to go through the whole thing. The coaster, I believe, is simple, yet effective. The engravings are perfectly cut, and the coaster is able to hold cups of almost any size.
In this image, you can see the engraving in the wood. The engraving is a quote from Anne Frank: "Whoever is happy will make others happy too." I put this quote on here because I didn't want to just have a coaster with nothing on it. I believe that this part of the project is very good, and likely the best part.
In this image, you can see the coaster in action, being used by a water bottle. The coaster may not stick to the surface the best it could, but it definitely gets the job done. The coaster's structural integrity is great enough to hold almost anything. I believe that the coaster I made was built very nicely, but there could be some improvements.
Using a laser cutter along with Tinkercad, I created a coaster with an engraving because, in English, we are learning about the Holocaust and Anne Frank, so I wanted to make something to commemorate that. During this process, I learned that I should have made the coaster rounder because the coaster I made had a few edges. I also learned that I should have made something on the bottom so that the coaster would not slide around as much.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to Empowered Learner because in this project I set a goal to use the laser cutter to my greatest ability, and adapt to it.
A challenge I overcame on this project was making the engraving in the coaster. I was able to do it by separating the coaster itself, and the engraving into separate files in order to properly laser cut it.
Given a chance to do this again, I would change the roundness of the coaster. The reason why I would change it is that the coaster does not look as good as it possibly could look if it was just a bit rounder. I would also add something on the bottom of the coater in order to make it stop sliding as much as it does.
