List of 25:
I used scratch to make several different short projects. First, I made a game/story where a superhero brings bananas to a monkey. Then, I animated the word "Mystery." For my third project, I made a Google logo about being active. Next, I made an animation in which a duck and a rooster are stuck in a boat on the sea. For my final project I created my own version of the episode called "The Signal" from The Amazing World of Gumball.
During this project, I learned how to make a block. I have tried to do this in the past without really understanding how it worked. I got confused when I had to define the block. By watching the tutorial for the Gumball's Coding Adventure project, I learned how to use existing blocks to define the block I created. I also learned how to animate a wave. During the High Seas project I learned how to animate the water sprite to look like waves. I did this by changing the whirl effect. Another thing I learned during this project was how edit existing sprites, and draw my own. This was very helpful throughout all the activities.
This project is tied to a few of the MITECS standards. One of those standards is Empowered Learner. This project ties to Empowered Learner because I had to decide what story I wanted to tell for the Superhero, High Seas, and Gumball projects. I had to decide what word I wanted to animate and how for the Animate a Name project. For all of these projects, once I knew what I wanted to do, I had to figure out how to make it happen. This project is also tied to the Knowledge Constructor standard. On the MITECS website, under Knowledge Constructor, it says that students "Plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information and other resources for their informational or creative pursuits." I had find information to help me figure out what I needed to do to make my projects. I was able to find most of this information in the tutorial videos. A third standard this project ties to is Innovative Designer. This standard is all about the design process. I used the design process while writing my code. I had to test and revise it many times until it did what I wanted it to.
There were a few different challenges I had to overcome during this project. After finishing the first project, I had to figure out how to save and record it. I've used Screencastify in the past, so I tried to add that extension on a computer at school, but every time I tried, it said it was blocked by the administrator. I was able to download it at home, as long as it wasn't on my account. Then, when I tried to record it I couldn't get my code to run when I pressed the keys that were supposed to make it run. I eventually figured out that I had to click the screen before any of the keys would work. I also figured out how to save a project by logging into the scratch account that I created when I was in 4th grade. I ran into another problem during the High Seas project. I needed record the sound of the thunder, but because my computer at home doesn't have a microphone, I couldn't record it with Screencastify when I recorded my video. At school I tried to add the sound using the imovie app on the ipads, but I couldn't import my video. My teacher helped me figure out that the file type did't work with imovie, and he helped me convert the file to a different type. I was then able to record the sound I wanted.
In my High Seas project, the wave animation wasn't very smooth during the storm. It skipped around a little bit, and wasn't as even as I would like it to be. By that point, I was to tired to mess with it, and it still worked alright, so I left it. If I could do this project again, I might try to figure out what was going on there, and how I could fix it.
The Code You Hero project might help me if I wanted to program games because for part of it I did have to program a simple game. The High Seas and Gumball projects might be useful if I wanted to be an animator. For both of these projects, I had to make a short story animation. The Google Logo project might be useful if I wanted to design Google Doodles. Sometimes before a movie, there is short animation of a name, like Dreamworks. The Animate a Name project might be useful if I wanted to design things like that.
