Using digital multimedia tools and video editing software, I created a 3‑minute documentary-style video about sustainable school gardening because I wanted to show how hands-on gardening can teach science, nutrition, and community responsibility while reducing food waste.
During this process, I learned basic video production skills (storyboarding, filming, lighting), video editing techniques, interview question design, and how to translate research into a clear narrative.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to Knowledge Constructor and Creative Communicator because I researched reliable sources, synthesized information about sustainable gardening practices, and communicated findings through storytelling, visuals, and interviews.
A challenge I overcame on this project was coordinating interview times and capturing clear audio outdoors. I was able to do it by creating a detailed schedule, using a simple lapel microphone, and scouting quiet filming locations early in the day.
Given a chance to do this again, I would change the scope to include more student voices and a short how-to segment. The reason why I would change it is because it would increase student engagement and provide practical steps viewers can replicate.

My project connects to the Digital Multimedia and Agriculture CTE program at Hastings High School.
My project connects to careers in environmental education, urban agriculture, multimedia production, and community outreach because it combines subject-matter expertise in sustainable food systems with communication and media skills used to educate communities and promote initiatives.
