Idea: BIPOC
It stands for Black People, Indigenous Peoples, and People of Color.
This is a term to use for a group of people.
How can we become AntiRacist people of color?
There are many different BIPOC groups that are not working together to improve the situation our communities go through. To be united and to be able to share our experiences with others who may not be aware of how students perceive racist attitudes.
I teach my courses with the goal of helping each student be successful. Success will be different for each student.
My experience teaching at a CC has been very positive. However, I have encounter situations where I felt I was not prepared to confront the prejudice from the person on the other side. One time, I was told to use an office that was in the library (due to not having space at the main office). Once I got to the office dedicated to counselors at the library, I was approached by a person who asked me why I was in that place. I explained that I am a counselor and I will be using the counselor's office. That person asked me to show my ID. After seeing my ID, she called the main counseling office to "verify" that I was indeed a counselor authorized to be in that office alone.
Situations like this one, put me back to think "I do not look like a professor or a counselor" maybe I should not feel discriminated against because after all I may not look like a counselor. I thought I should starting to dress up to be able to "look like" a counselor.
