Term 2

How We Organise Ourselves:

'Governmental decisions may have consequences for people and the environment.'

We will lead an inquiry into...

  • What the Government is and how it works.

  • If different genders always had the same rights.

  • If different races always had the same rights.

Term two has started brilliantly! We have learnt so much about the Houses of Parliament and democracy in the United Kingdom. For example, we now know the difference between the House of Commons and House of Lords, what Members of Parliament do, what the cabinet and opposition is and so much more...all in the first four days!

This is our floor book page of information about the Lords and Commons.

In week two and three of term 2, we had to self isolate. However, check out some of our home learning activities that the children have been doing; this is now work based around women's right to vote and the suffrage movement of the early 20th century....

VAD plan

Virtue's newspaper plan

We are planning a newspaper report about a death at the Epsom Derby!

Even though we have been working from home, this hasn't stopped Year 6 from producing some amazing writing. This week, they learnt all about Emily Davison and the tragedy that occured at the Epsom Derby. Look at these fantastic newspaper reports they have written!

In science this week (26th Nov), we were learning about thermal insulators and how different materials have different insulation to them. We also focussed on the skills of reading a thermometer, using pipettes, test tubes and conical flasks.

We have learnt so much about how the government functions, so we decided to carry out our own debate, just like the debates that happen in the House of Commons. We included roles for the Government, Opposition, Speaker, Serjeant at Arms, Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition. We remembered that we had to stand up if we wanted to speak, but had to listen to instructions from the Speaker. It's fair to say that some of our Year 6s would be fantastic politicians!

On Friday 27th November, we were very lucky to have a live lesson from the UK government. Both classes joined a live video call where we were given more information about how the government works and how laws are made.

On Friday 4th December, we had our Elf Day, where we raised money for Alzheimer's society. We enjoyed an elf maths investigation and created Christmas-themed decorations. Everyone's costumes were fantastic!

Elves....playing basketball!

Two members on Redwood class have been inspired to fundraise this term, and will be completing a sponsored car boot challenge! If you would like to read more about this or donate to their cause, please follow the link to their Virgin Money Giving page.
