BTEC LEVEL 3 SPORT AND EXERCISE SCIENCE EXTENDED DIPLOMA
This course is aimed at those students who are wanting to pursue a career in some aspect of sport. Whether this means you want to go to university to study a sports course or if you're wanting to move onto an advanced level apprenticeship this course will allow you to this.
As part of this course we cover a variety of topics. We have more theory/science based topics such as functional anatomy, physiology, psychology and nutrition as well as the more vocational units such as specialised fitness training, field and laboratory based fitness testing and coaching for performance and fitness. Our other units such as applied research methods and research project provide essential skills for students who are looking to study at university. The list of our other units are below;
Physical activity for individual and group-based exercise
Sociocultural issues in sport and exercise science
Technology in sport and exercise science
Sports injury and assessment
We're in a unique position to offer four members of staff all with specialist areas on this course which will enhance your learning and experience on the course.
The Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science is not combined with other subjects as it is a full-time course in itself. We do however have variants of this course which include the Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science which allows you to take one other subject alongside it or the Extended Certificate in Sport and Exercise Science which allows you to take two other subjects with this course. The only difference with these courses are you will cover less units as your time will be spread across the different subjects that you have chosen.
A-LEVEL PE
Our A-level Physical Education course studies the demands placed on a sports performer from physiological, psychological and sociological points of view. The topics you'll cover are;
Applied anatomy and physiology
Exercise physiology
Biomechanical movements
Skill acquisition
Sport psychology
Sport and society
The role of technology in physical activity and sport
It also offers you the opportunity to demonstrate your understanding and performance in your own sport as the coursework involves you analysing your own sports performance as well as being assessed in your performance.
We're in a unique and privileged position to be able to deliver this course with three specialist subject teachers who all focus on their own area of the course.
This course can be combined with other subjects. Previously students who have studied A-level PE have also studied subjects such as biology, psychology, maths and sociology as some content transfers across however this does not mean you can only pick those.
BTEC LEVEL 3 SPORT AND EXERCISE SCIENCE
This will be a combination of assignments, practical assessments and exams. Examples of this could include written essays, coaching observations, multiple choice exams, timed case-studies.
BTEC LEVEL 3 SPORTS COACHING
This course is assessed via coursework. Throughout all of the different units you may be asked to submit essays, create academic posters, design and deliver presentations or be assessed practically within a coaching session.
A-LEVEL
70% of your grade comes from two exams at the end of your two years of study. The exams are two hours long and are split into 'Paper 1' and 'Paper 2'.
Paper 1 covers applied physiology and anatomy, skill acquisition and sport and society .
Paper 2 covers exercise physiology and biomechanics, sport psychology and sport and society and technology in sport
The other 30% comes from 'non-exam assessment' which is made up of your performance in your sport and a written piece of coursework in which you analyse your own performance and compare to an elite performer.
Hartlepool Sixth Form offer elite sports academies that fit into your timetable alongside your A-Levels, BTEC or T-Levels. We currently offer:
