Introduction
Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to explain the law of conservation of mass for physical and chemical changes and to demonstrate the law of conservation of mass mathematically.
Hypothesis: In any physical or chemical change, if the mass of the reactants are determined then the mass of the products are known because of the law of conservation of mass.
Variables:
IV: Type of Reaction System
DV: Mass of Products
Control: The accepted mass of reactants
Materials: beaker, graduated cylinder, thermometer, alka seltzer, DI water, watch glass, electronic balance
Safety Precautions: Be careful, this lab may cause an upset stomach.
Summary of Procedure: In this experiment, the law of conservation of mass will be tested by measuring the mass of reactants before a physical and/or chemical change takes place and then measuring the mass of the products after the change has occurred. The mass difference will be determined and the law of conservation will be examined to see if it has been violated.
