Welcome! My name is Mrs.Maria Martinez and I am your Harmony School of Excellence-Laredo HOSA Chapter Advisor. I am your one-stop shop for many biomedical opportunities and experiences. Come to our interest meeting to learn more about HOSA and membership requirements or send me an email at memartinez@harmonytx.org. I am here to support you along your biomedical career pathway :)
My mission is to engage scholars in hands-on experiences that will expose them to real-world scenarios. Combining work-based learning experiences and STEM classroom instruction can be complicated at times, but not when I implement HOSA Future Health Professionals and Registered Dental Assistant Industry-Based Certifications to my classroom. Through student-centered learning, scholars will participate in research, competitive events, shadowing experiences, and much more.

HOSA Purpose
"The purpose of the HOSA organization is to develop leadership and technical HOSA skill competencies through a program of motivation, awareness, and recognition, which is an integral part of the Health Science Education instructional program. "
2023-2024 Happy Hands Challenge
The Happy Hands Contest was developed as an opportunity to educate students on the importance of hand washing while also allowing them to create an original design for an SC Johnson Professional hand soap dispenser.
Let's learn about Vital Signs
Scholars worked on a cut-and-paste matching activity to identify the proper tool and range for each vital sign (Heart Rate, Respiration Rate, Oxygen Saturation, Glucose level, Pupillary Dilation). Scholars also had an opportunity to practice the hands-on skills with their partners and color the pain scale used by pediatricians.
ABO Blood Typing
Scholars analyzed different blood samples and identified the blood types using the agglutination properties of blood.
HOSA State Leadership Conference April 2024- Galveston, Texas
I am delighted to announce that Genesis Garza has been awarded a $1,000 HOSA Scholarship. Moreover, she has earned automatic acceptance to participate in the Leadership Initiative Summer 2025 Internship Program.
During this internship, Genesis will have the opportunity to enhance her skills and knowledge in the biomedical field. She will be working with the esteemed Johns Hopkins Medical School hospital, a leading institution in the medical domain. This experience promises to be transformative, enabling her to make a meaningful impact on lives while expanding her abilities.
Furthermore, Genesis will receive two letters of recommendation for college applications, accumulate valuable community service hours, and engage in college probability modeling. These additional benefits will undoubtedly enrich her academic and professional journey.
Genesis is eagerly anticipating the commencement of the Summer 2025 Internship Program, and we are confident that this experience will be both enriching and rewarding for her.

As a school, we got a Certificate of Recognition for participating in the HOSA Service Project- Be the Match.

HOSA members are encouraged to take full advantage of the HOSA National Competitive Events Program, a constantly expanding and improving series of health care-related competitive events. Competition within a state is held in the spring as a means of identifying those members eligible for competition at the HOSA National Leadership Conference. Imagine the pride that members feel when their names are called and they stand on stage waiting to receive a National HOSA Medallion for recognition as a first, second or third place event winner.
HOSA Offers 56 Competitive Events that are aligned to the National Healthcare Foundation and Accountability Criteria outlined by the National Consortium for Health Science Education. Please use the link below to access the Competitive Events Resource page.
HOSA members are required to compete in at least 1 competitive event.
City of Laredo Health Department Spring Break 2023 Rotations
A special thanks to our community leaders from the City of Laredo Health Department for allowing our scholars to shadow their Health Professionals. Scholars rotated through Health Education, Labs, Epidemiology, and Medical Assistant & Physician. They attended all Spring Break Week, Monday thru Friday from 8am-12pm.
Ophthalmology Shadowing Experience w/Dr.Hochman Interest Form
Dr. Michael A. Hochman, MD invited scholars from the Biomedical pathway of Harmony School of Excellence-Laredo to visit his ophthalmology practice and shadow him while in the operating room on Thursdays from 5:30 am to 8:00 am.
Medical Math 2021 Winner- Bianca Shepherd
Medical Math provides members with the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills required to identify, solve, and apply mathematical principles. This competitive event consists of a written test with tie-breaker questions. This event aims to inspire members to learn about the integration of mathematics in health care, including temperature, weights, and measures used in the health community.
2020 Health Care Photography Winner- Aurora Fuentes Photography+ Video Exemplars
Provides HOSA members with the opportunity to gain knowledge about different health careers and analyze them through the medium of digital photography. Competitors will photograph three different health professionals performing an aspect of their job, edit the photos using computer software technology as needed, provide a written description of the career, and then may present their three printed pictures to a panel of judges. This event aims to inspire members to use photography as a means to explore health careers.
Hands-on Live Lessons Grand Canyon University
GCU LIVE Lessons are an innovative opportunity for students and teachers to participate in a 45-minute interactive activity specific to an area of interest. Lessons can be hosted in a face-to-face classroom or, for select lessons, a virtual classroom setting. GCU LIVE Lessons feature GCU curriculum designed by the university’s college experts and faculty. Students will have the opportunity to develop hands-on skills or explore advanced concepts through the web-hosted presentation.
Presidential Service Award
In 2003, the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation founded the President’s Volunteer Service Award to recognize the important role of volunteers in America’s strength and national identity. This award honors individuals whose service positively impacts communities in every corner of the nation and inspires those around them to take action, too.
The Barbara James Service Awards
Provides members with the opportunity to become contributing members of their communities by performing worthy volunteer community service hours related to health. The Barbara James Service Award is in memory of Barbara James, 1982-83 HOSA Inc. Board Chairman. Her leadership skills and contributions to HOSA exemplify the caring and compassion of HOSA members. This award aims to inspire members to be proactive future health professionals and recognize individual HOSA members who have a commitment to community service in health.
All individual HOSA members who complete a minimum of one hundred (100) hours of service between June 1, 2020 and the state conference registration deadline (for state recognition) or as determined by the state advisor, will be recognized. For National Recognition, HOSA members must complete at least one hundred (100) hours of service between June 1, 2020 and May 15, 2021. (Dates change every year)
Levels of recognition:
• Bronze Level: 100.0 – 174.9 approved hours
• Silver Level: 175.0 – 249.9 approved hours
• Gold Level: 250.0+ approved hours

Future Doctors Academy Course Certificate
There are a lot of requirements needed for successfully applying to medical schools – like good academic grades, good MCAT scores, etc. Adding the Future Doctors Academy Course Certificate to your resume will add value (60 credit hours of extracurricular activities). Scholars will perform over 50 fun Practical Projects at home and gain dozens of medical skills!
Doctor's Hospital Build a Bear Donation
We had the amazing opportunity of donating stuffed animals to the Pediatric Department of Doctor's Hospital for kids in need. The man who conducted this event welcomed us with open arms. Being a freshman at the time, I could describe this experience as a new awakening of others' perspectives and getting out there into the real world. This event is by far one of the many moments where it felt so heart felting for me. (Quoted from HOSA former member)
Feed My Starving Children
FMSC offers volunteers a one-of-a-kind experience. You’ll hand-pack rice, soy, dried vegetables, and a nutritionally complete blend of vitamins and minerals into bags which are then sealed, boxed, placed on pallets, and shipped to our incredible partners working hard to reach the neediest children around the world.
HOSA FLC- Conference
Conference took place locally at LBJ campus. It was our first time going, and it was so much fun. We followed the professional HOSA attire. The first thing that happened at the campus was a little introduction of what the conference consists of: a mixture of speakers, social activities, and getting to know one another. My favorite part of this event was meeting new people and doing all of the activities (Quoted from HOSA former member).
"Three of the activities that I remember doing Zumba, the beauty of art in medicine, and how to improve your communication skills. The Zumba activity is pretty self-explanatory: we danced to all sorts of songs and the sole purpose of this activity was to see how dance has a huge impact on the body. Next, the beauty of art. One of the art teachers showed us how art implies into the medical field and many portraits that indicate how tireless doctors were. Finally, ¨how to improve your communication skills¨ activity was quite the journey. In the second picture, we played this game called mafia and without that game and event, I wouldn't be the spokesperson that I am today". (Quoted from HOSA former member).
HIPAA compliance training provides employees with a HIPAA introduction including how to recognize protected health information (PHI), proper uses and disclosures of PHI, how to keep PHI secure, and how to report a breach of PHI

First Zoom Session
"As unexpected, 2020 hit a hard strike into our daily lives due to the dangerous COVID pandemic. What I have learned throughout my 2-3 years of being in HOSA is that constructive criticism is always needed, how to work together no matter the circumstances, and leadership development." A collection of interactive medical and surgical clinical case scenarios to put your diagnostic and management skills to the test. Each clinical case scenario allows you to work through history taking, investigations, diagnosis, and management.
"While in HOSA, we do many fun activities that promote helpful skills that were future health professionals, will need later on in life. One of these awesome activates was Mystery Diagnosis. I had to create a patient scenario where my fellow peers had to try and guess the patient's condition/diagnosis". (Quoted from HOSA former member)
UT Health Science Center SA Leadership and Scholar Insights
Leadership and Scholar insights were interactive sessions will focus on skills and character traits which are important to develop when seeking a biomedical profession. The Scholar insight sessions were informational sessions where current Voelcker Biomedical Academy Scholars provide a presentation regarding the research in their respective mentor’s labs and share insights with their peers about research endeavors while in high school. This is great opportunity for interested students to hear about how to successfully pursue research endeavors, especially if they are considering a career in health career themselves. These are not Academy information or recruiting sessions, but rather conversations about some of the research happening at UTHSA.

Menudo Bowl Fundraiser Event
"It happened on January 19, 2019. This event was more of a fundraiser/event to get more recognition for the school and for the HOSA organization. We decorated goody bags and prepared a fishing game for the kids to play. What I got from this was more interactions with little kids and a first-hand moment of Mrs. Martinez's famous face paintings". (Quoted from HOSA former member)
International Festival Fundraiser Event
Itś a Harmony tradition where all clubs get together and decide what food and activities they should offer to the community. We sold cotton candy, cupcakes, and did a clown toss to raise funds to purchase HOSA Club T-Shirts.
