Application Leadership Club

Area Health Education Center of the Mid Rio Grande Border Area of Texas, Inc. (Mid Rio Grande Border AHEC) The commitment of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio to the Mid Rio Grande Border region formally began in 1993 with the establishment of the Mid Rio Grande Border AHEC (MRGB-AHEC). Since then, the MRGB-AHEC works closely with its partners to increase the opportunities available for high school students to enter a health career education program, improve the health status of the community and enhance the quality of life of residents in the region.

Mission

To enhance the quality of life in the communities of the region by:

  • Increasing the number of well-trained health care workers;

  • Enhancing the academic resources and support to existing health care providers; and

  • Fostering a healthy lifestyle for the citizens of the communities.

Smile Drive

The Smile Drive is where we, the AHEC scholars, donate to organizations in need like Casa Misericordia.

Community Service Opportunities

In the past 6 months, just with AHEC alone, I have earned 214 community service hours. To graduate I need 100, but I told myself I wanted to earn at least 1000 by Junior or Senior year! AHEC is a great way to help the community, learn, and earn community service hours.

AHEC has not only given me the chance to help our community and learn more about it, but has helped me grow as an individual. Just like HOSA, AHEC has helped me become more independent and a leader, instead of a follower. There's so much more I still need to learn, but HOSA and AHEC have both contributed to what I know now. There's no doubt that without Mrs. Martinez, my HOSA Chapter Advisor, or Ms.Gutierrez and Ms. Garza, my AHEC Advisors, I would be where I am right now gaining more knowledge everyday.
