This site contains nature-based learning activities aligned with the May 2022 draft of the Minnesota 4th grade academic standards. These activities are designed to be supplementary: incorporate one or two ideas into your math instruction to provide your students with the benefits of nature-based learning!
Nature-based learning does not require a fully rewritten curriculum or daily nature-based activities to be beneficial! Simply bringing students to an outdoor space (or bringing natural items indoors!) will provide the natural context for learning. As you go, you will discover what does and does not work for you. That's okay! Adjust your plan and keep on going: nature-based learning is a process.
A class set of clipboards (I use the cheap ones from the dollar store), a frequently replenished bucket of pencils, seat pads (stadium chairs, old outdoor cushions, yoga mats, or even garbage bags work!), and a whiteboard easel. It can be helpful to stock a backpack with extra gloves and hats or sunscreen and bug spray, depending on the season!
