Cairo has a population of 10.1 million people and is the capital city of the country of Egypt. In Cairo, like almost everywhere else in the country, Egyptian Arabic is spoken. Cairo is home to numerous theatres, opera houses, and concert halls. Due to its convenient location at the hub between southern Europe, the Middle East, the Maghreb, and sub-Saharan Africa, Cairo became an important trading center early on. The most important branches of production are metal processing, the cement industry, the manufacture of furniture, shoes, tobacco products, and textiles, as well as the printing industry. Together with Johannesburg and Lagos, Cairo is one of the leading economic centers in Africa.
The Pyramids of Giza near Cairo are among the most famous structures of mankind. After the destruction of all six other wonders of the ancient world, they are the last to remain. Called El Ahram (“the sanctuaries”) by the Egyptians, the pyramids rise on a plateau, a spur of the Western Desert about eight kilometers southwest of the city of Giza (Gîza), a Cairo suburb. The pyramids are therefore around 15 kilometers from the city center, directly on the Pyramid Street (Scharia el-Ahram).
