An Ensemble is a Group of Musicians making music together, therefore a Vocal Ensemble are different Groups of Singers. They can be different sizes, and given names based on their age, type of voice, gender, or type of music that they sing.
Some examples are an A Capella Group, a Barbershop Quartet, a Children's Choir, a Trio, a Women's Choir and more!
While not a specific rule, a small group of singers ranging from 5-20 singers is considered a small vocal ensemble.
Note that they are described as an ensemble and NOT a chorus/choir
When there are 5 or less singers, we describe the size of the ensemble:
Solo- 1 Singer
Duet- 2 Singers
Trio- 3 Singers
Quartet- 4 Singers
Quintet- 5 Singers
When it comes to small vocal ensembles, only the amount of singers determines the type of vocal ensemble.
A group of 20 or more singers is called a Chorus or Choir.
To determine the type of vocal ensemble a chorus/choir is, we listen for the following characteristics: Age and Vocal Range
Below are the common types of choirs:
Men’s choir
Mixed Choir
Children’s Choir
Typically, a children’s choir refers to a chorus with elementary student singers or Unchanged Voices
Once students are in middle school and beyond, they are sorted into vocal ensembles based on Vocal Range instead of age. Traditionally Women’s Chorus, or a Treble Chorus refers to a chorus of singers with a Higher vocal range, usually female singers. Men’s chorus refers to singers with a lower vocal range, usually male singers. A Mixed Choir includes all singers.
