Scale Karate

Scale Karate will serve a two-fold purpose. The first is to test students knowledge of fundamental scales necessary to students development. The second is a fun activity for those students that want the extra challenge on their instrument. Below you will see a list of rules and requirements for each grade level. Once a level is passed, students will receive a "Belt" for their case and also sign a poster in the band room for all of their classmates to see who has passed what levels as added motivation. This is replacing required scales used in the past-have fun with it and see how far you can get. Students must meet the following benchmarks for their grade each quarter: Quarter 1: White Belt, Quarter 2: Yellow Belt, Quarter 3: Orange Belt, Quarter 4: Red Belt. Due Dates for those are on your lesson assignment sheets. Students may move as fast as they like, but must have at least one belt completed per quarter for their grade.

Scale karate rules:

1. All scales must be memorized

2. Perfect performance – no hesitations or incorrectly attacked notes

3. You are allowed ONE re-do on ONE scale, after that you can re-test later

4. You have to pass off on all scales for that belt at the same time – so if you played the Bb scale right last time, you still have to play it again.

5. All students have the scale sheet, you can work as far ahead as you wish.

6. Scale karate opportunities are only offered during designated advisement's and if there is time at the end of lessons

7. Percussion will have their own list of assignments to perform different from wind players-requirements are posted in the files to the left. Required tempos are the same as the rest of the grade-60 bpm.
